Ian Patrick Moran (born August 24, 1972) is an American retired professional ice hockey defenseman.

Moran played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, and Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League over his 15-year career (NHL).

After suffering a knee injury, he resigned in 2008.

He has been with Neutral Zone New England since 2017. Moran was the head coach of the Evansville Thunderbolts in the Southern Professional Hockey League from 2018-2019.

Early life

Moran was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 24, 1972, to parents Michael and Anita. He is the oldest of three children, and he and his younger sister Mary Pierce and Meghann are the youngest of three siblings. At age 4, he discovered an interest in hockey and started playing. He competed in the 1986 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from New Haven, Connecticut, as a youth.

His family eventually settled in Acton, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, after moving around as a child. He attended Belmont Hill School in high school. Moran graduated high school and received a full ice hockey scholarship at Boston College.

Personal life

Mattigan (born 2000), Weston (born 2004), and Leighton (born 2007) reside in Duxbury, Massachusetts, with his partner Britta and their four children. Since 2017, he currently owns and operates IM Hockey Skills out of Dedham, Massachusetts, as well as the head New England scout for and director of Neutral Zone Ice.org.

Ian Moran Career

Playing career

Moran started his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 6th round (107th overall) in the 1990 NHL Draft. During the Penguins' playoff run in the 1993–94 NHL season, he made his NHL debut. Moran scored 19 goals, 44 assists, and 281 penalty minutes in 433 games during his career in regular season with the Penguins. Moran was traded to the Boston Bruins for a fourth round pick in 2003, which became Paul Bissonnette on March 11, 2003. Moran found out about the trade while playing hopscotch with his daughter and ended up writing the phone number to the Bruins' general manager in chalk on his driveway.

Moran had spells with Bofors IK and the United Kingdom's Elite Ice Hockey League during the 2004–05 NHL lockout, but he was forced to miss the remainder of the year due to a knee injury. Moran signed with the Anaheim Ducks on August 15, 2006. Moran only played one game with the Ducks during his season with the American Hockey League and then in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga for Eisbären Berlin, Germany.

Moran signed as an unrestricted free agent with the New Jersey Devils on July 24, 2007, after transferring from Germany. Moran played for the Devils' minor league affiliate Lowell Devils and sustained another knee injury before, but he was never called up to play again. Moran retired as a free agent and concluded his professional career by the season's end.
