Jimmy Howard Career

Playing career

Howard began his junior hockey career with the Westport Rideaus of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League, where he competed from ages 14 to 16 before joining the National Team Development Program. During the 2001–2002 season, he spent nine games with the Under-17 team and 26 with the Under-18 team for a total record of 22–11–1, with four shutouts, and was named USA Goaltender of the Year. Howard played for the Maine Black Bears' men's ice hockey team for three seasons before heading to the University of Maine. Howard was a football coach with the Black Bears during the 2003–2004 frozen Four championship series, losing 1–0 to the University of Denver. Although Howard was playing for the Black Bears in the second round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, the Detroit Red Wings drafted him in the 2nd round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Howard set team and league records during his three years with the Black Bears.

Howard played for the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League from 2005 to 2006. In each of his first two games, he became the first NHL goalie to face a penalty shot in each of his first two games. Howard's debut in the AHL was one of his best in professional ice hockey. He set many personal records as well as franchise records during this season, including being the first Griffin to be named to the AHL's All-Rookie Team and assisting in the establishment of the Griffins' franchise victory streak streak of 12.

In the 2005–06 season, he was in net for the Red Wings four times, leading to a 1–2–0 record, a GAA of 29.99, and a save percentage of 0.94. Howard was in net for the Red Wings for the fourth time in the 2007–09 season, up from three times during the 2008–09 season, bringing his total NHL games played to 9.

Howard did not participate in four games in the 2007-08 regular season, and therefore did not qualify to have his name engraved on the cup. However, he was included in the 2008 Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup photo, the Cup was held for a day, and the Red Wings' administration gave him a Stanley Cup ring. Howard was supposed to compete with Ty Conklin for the 2008-09 NHL season, despite Conklin's apparent advantage in terms of experience and contracts following his departure in June 2008. Despite Howard's inability to make the Red Wings roster for the 2008–2009 season, he was due to make the roster in the near future.

Howard's roster spot became a reality during the 2009 off-season, when Detroit refused to give Conklin a new contract but instead promoted Howard to Osgood's full-time backup. On October 27, he won his first game of the 2009-10 season against the Vancouver Canucks in relief of Chris Osgood, who made 20 saves. Howard won by 3–0 over the Tampa Bay Lightning on December 17, 2009, his first career shutout. Howard rose to his starting position mid-season after Osgood's, much earlier than anticipated. Howard had a great 2010-2010 season, placing him in the top five GAA and Save %, while others were ranked in the top ten percent, and he was nominated for the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year. After Crosby repeatedly cross-checked Howard's teammates, Henrik Zetterberg, Howard gained more fame in a March 22, 2010 game against the Pittsburgh Penguins when he grabbed Sidney Crosby from behind and placed his glove in Crosby's face.

Howard played in his first NHL playoff game, losing 3–2 to the Phoenix Coyotes on April 14, 2010. In a 3–0 victory over the Coyotes on April 20, he registered his first career playoff shutout, making 29 saves. When Howard's first NHL playoff series came to seven games, the Coyotes were eliminated by the Red Wings. In five games, the Detroit Red Wings were then eliminated by the San Jose Sharks. During the offseason, Howard's average was 2.75 goals against average, with a 0.915 save percentage. Howard was also a finalist for the 2010 Calder Memorial Trophy in Los Angeles, but he came runner-up to Buffalo's Tyler Myers. Howard received the 2010 Detroit Red Wings-Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association Rookie of the Year Award.

Howard shuts down in Detroit's season opener against the Anaheim Ducks to begin the 2010-11 NHL season. Howard signed a two-year contract extension with the Red Wings worth $2.25 million per season on February 28, 2011. In the 2nd round of the playoffs, the Red Wings lost in seven games to the San Jose Sharks.

Howard won his 30th game of the season on January 23, 2012, his third victory of the season, ahead of the All-Star break. Detroit defeated the Red Sox in their 17th straight home victory, and kept them in first place in the standings. Howard will win only five games after the All-Star break, because of a broken finger on his stick hand that required him to miss eight games, and a recurring groin injury that left him scratched in seven other games later in the season.

Howard set a 21–13–7 record in 2012-13 NHL as the Red Wings claimed their 22nd consecutive playoff appearance. Howard Howard's contract with the Red Wings came to an end on April 16, 2013.

Howard had a 16–7-7 record and a.921 save percentage before the All-Star break, with a 2.11 GAA and a.9251 save percentage. Howard was accepted to the NHL All-Star Game, but he was unable to participate due to a groin tear against the Washington Capitals on January 10, which forced him to miss five weeks of the season. Howard set a 7–6–4 record after recovering from his injury, with 2.99 GAA and a.896 save percentage.

Howard's results dropped even more in the 2015–16 season, and rookie Petr Mrazek got more starts than Howard throughout the season. However, Howard won his 22nd shutout victory as a Red Wing against the Philadelphia Flyers in a 3–0 game at Joe Louis Arena on April 6, 2016, taking him to his fourth appearance in franchise history.

Howard had a right knee injury on December 20, 2016. During the game, opposition starting goalkeeper Ben Bishop was also hurt. Howard was recalled to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins in February 4, 2017 for a conditioning assignment, but he was eventually called back to the NHL. Howard played in 26 NHL games, going 10–11–1 with a 2.10 GAA and a.927 SV%, and in four AHL games, going 3–1 with a 2.11 GAA and a.920 SV%, with a.920 SV%.

Howard defeated the Minnesota Wild in the season's opening game at Little Caesars Arena on October 5, 2017. Howard appeared in his 500th NHL game on February 14, 2019, becoming the third Red Wings goalie to reach the milestone since Terry Sawchuk and Chris Osgood. He made history by becoming the seventh American-born goalie to reach the milestone. Howard was signed by the Red Wings to a one-year deal extension on March 20.

The Red Wings revealed on October 1, 2020, that Howard will not return to the team for the 2020-2021 season. Howard announced his resignation on January 28, 2021.
