Trevor Zegras Career

Playing career

Zegras played bantam major hockey with the Mid Fairfield Rangers before joining the Avon Old Farms school's Winged Beavers of the Founders League (USHS). Zegras also scored 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points during his time with the Winged Beavers from 2016 to 2017. Zegras, a sophomore at Avon Old Farms, participated in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (USNTDP) Top 40 tryout and registered for the team.

Zegras joined the USNTDP under 17 team for their 2017-18 season in the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he scored 20 goals and 39 assists for 59 points. He joined their U18 team in 2018–19, earning 87 points, with 61 assists. Zegras was selected in the first round, ninth overall, by the Anaheim Ducks at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Despite his draft pick, Zegras kept his commitment to Boston University's NCAA Division I ice hockey.

For the 2019-20 NCAA season, Zegras competed for the Boston University Terriers men's ice hockey team. In 33 games, he finished third among Division I freshmen in points with 36 points. Zegras was selected to the Hockey East Third Team All-Star team and named a finalist for Hockey East Rookie of the Year at the end of his freshman season.

Zegras officially ended his undergraduate career on March 27, 2020, when signing a three-year entry-level deal with the Ducks. Zegras were re-assigned to the San Diego Gulls, their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, for the remainder of the 2020–21 season. Zegras made his professional debut with Gulls on February 5, 2021, and scored one goal and two assists in a 4–1 victory over the Bakersfield Condors on February 5, 2021. He was eventually recalled to the NHL level in late February and made his NHL debut against the Arizona Coyotes on February 22. In a 3–2 overtime victory, Zegras scored his first NHL goal against Adin Hill of the Arizona Coyotes on March 18, 2021. Jamie Drysdale, a rookie, also scored in the same game, making the teammates the youngest in NHL history to score their first NHL goals less than 2:30 apart. He finished the season with 13 points in 24 games, with six in his final six regular-season games.

Zegras were eventually returned to the AHL in April to help with his growth and transition to the professional league. Executive Vice President and General Manager Bob Murray referred to the re-assignment as "he's ahead of our target date," and as a result, we're moving him to center ice immediately." He will need some experience in the AHL first, but we're hoping that he will be back with us in the near future and play center for the Ducks for years to come." Zegras made the change from left wing to center when returning to the AHL, which resulted in more offensive output.

Zegras began playing center during training camp in the 2021-22 season and was selected to their opening night roster. When playing with Sonny Milano and Rickard Rakell, Zegras quickly became a mainstay on the Ducks roster. In a game against the Buffalo Sabres on December 7, 2021, Zegras gave Sonny Milano a never seen before lacrosse-style assist. He had scored 22 points in 27 games to rank second among the top league rookies in scoring by December, while still averaging 17:00 in ice time. Zegras was one of four Ducks players on the NHL All-Star Game fan vote as a result of his play. After scoring 11 points in nine games, he was named the NHL Rookie of the Month for December 2021. Despite being disqualified for the 2022 All-Star Game, Zegras was later named a special guest on the Breakaway Challenge. Zegras had 23 goals and 38 assists in his first full season as a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy, the NHL's rookie of the year; the award went to Moritz Seider. Zegras was named the cover athlete for NHL 23 alongside Sarah Nurse in August 2022.
