Kirby Dach Career

Playing career

Dach was selected second overall by the Saskatoon Blades in the 2016 Western Hockey League (WHL) Bantam Draft. He appeared in 19 games, scoring 10 points. Dach has been with the Blades for the entire 2017-2018 season. In 52 games, he had seven goals and 39 assists.

Dach was named as an alternate captain for the Blades for the remainder of the season in January 2019. For the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, he was named captain for Team Orr. Team Orr defeated Team Cherry 5–4, with Dach recording one assist. In 62 games, he had 25 goals and 48 assists.

In the latest NHL Central Scouting Services (CSS) final draft rankings for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Dach was ranked third overall by the Chicago Blackhawks; he was ranked third among North American skaters. On July 8, he signed his three-year, entry-level deal with the club.

After training camp, Dach began his professional playing career with the Blackhawks right away. He made his NHL debut against the Washington Capitals on October 20, 2019. In a 2–1 loss on October 22, Dach scored his first NHL goal against Marc-André Fleury of the Vegas Golden Knights. Dach finished the pandemic-shortened 2019–20 NHL season with 8 goals and 15 assists in 64 games. He also played in nine playoff games, scoring one goal and five assists.

Dach suffered a wrist injury in the 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, missing a significant portion of the 2020–21 NHL season. On March 27, 2021, he rejoined the Blackhawks. Dachtan appeared in 18 games, scoring two goals and eight assists. He aggravated his wrist injury and missed the remaining three games of the season.

Both Dach and the team had a difficult season in 2021-22 as he returned to the roster full time but failed to produce, in the midst of a frustrating season for the Blackhawks that saw wholesale coaching turnover. In 70 games, he only had nine goals and 17 assists, while in the faceoff circle, which was also struggling. There were talks of selling Dacha elsewhere as new general manager Kyle Davidson started a team rebuilding.

Dach was traded by the Blackhawks to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for the thirteenth overall pick and a third-round pick during the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Despite his struggles in previous seasons, the Canadiens had to trade out traded defenceman Alexander Romanov to the New York Islanders in order to make the move.

Dach signed a four-year, $13.45 million contract extension with the Canadiens on September 7, 2022. In overtime on October 17, Dach scored his first goal for the team, giving them a 3–2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. "I felt like I had a few chances in previous games to get my first one," he said afterward. However, there's no better feeling than discovering your first name on a new team at home."
