Vyacheslav Kozlov Career

Playing career

In the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Kozlov was drafted 45th overall by the Detroit Red Wings. In Detroit's 5–4 victory over the St. Louis Blues on March 12, 1992, Kozlov made his NHL debut on March 12, 1992, with two assists. In the 1993–94 NHL season, he was a regular participant for Detroit. Coach Scotty Bowman formed the Red Wings' "Russian Five" team, which included forwards Kozlov, Sergei Fedorov and Igor Larionov, as well as defenseman Vladimir Konstantin and Fetisov. In 1997, this team helped Detroit win the Stanley Cup for the first time. Kozlov was also a contributing member of the team's second straight Stanley Cup appearance in 1998.

Kozlov played for Detroit until the summer of 2001, when he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres as part of a package for Dominik Haek. Kozlov was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers following one injury-shortened season in Buffalo.

During his first season in Atlanta, Kozlov served as team captain until Shawn McEachern was appointed as the sole captain for the remainder of the 2002–03 season.

Kozlov has been recognized as the best shooter in the shootouts since the inception of NHL play in 2005.

On July 4, 2007, Kozlov re-signed with the Thrashers, signing a three-year, $11-million contract with a no-trade clause. On December 26, 2007, Kozlov played his 1,000th NHL game against the Columbus Blue Jackets and his former Russian Five teammate, Sergei Fedorov. He bounced back in 2008–09 with one of his best seasons of his career, scoring 26 goals and 76 points after scoring only 41 points during the 2007–08 season.

Atlanta will not re-sign Kozlov for the 2010-11 NBA season, according to Rick Dudley.

In 2010, Kozlov signed a one-year contract with HC CSKA Moscow. In February 2011, Kozlov left CSKA to join Salavat Yulaev Ufa, which is playoff bound. He appeared in the team's last four regular season games and all of the team's playoff games. The Ufa team advanced to the KHL finals and clinched the Gagarin Cup, beating Atlant Moscow 4 games to 1.

He signed a one-year deal with HC Dynamo Moscow on May 19, 2011, with whom he also won his second Gagarin Cup.

Kozlov joined HC Spartak Moscow late in the 2012–13 season, appearing in just 13 games. On March 19, 2013, he signed a one-year contract with the team. In 54 games, he had eight goals and 18 assists, which were unsurpassed in 2013-14.

He signed a one-year contract with Atlant Moscow Oblast on July 15, 2014.

Kozlov announced his retirement after 28 years of ice hockey during the 2014–15 season. He is now an assistant coach for Spartak Moscow.
