Ray Whitney Career

Playing career

Whitney and his brother Dean were stick boys for the Edmonton Oilers' Wayne Gretzky era long before he played in the NHL. Ryan Smyth, the Whitney brothers' third stick boy, was also a future NHL player.

Whitney spent three years with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League (WHL), leading the entire league with 185 points in 1990-91. The Chiefs and Whitney were the recipients of the Canadian Hockey League's 1991 Memorial Cup.

Whitney was the second player to be drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft (23rd overall). Pat Falloon, his WHL Spokane Chiefs colleague, was the Sharks' first pick. The Sharks had hoped that the two would make for a good scoring pairing, but it didn't turn out. Whitney began his professional career in 1991-92, serving with clubs in the German Eishockey Liga and the International Hockey League, as well as two San Jose Sharks games. Over the next two seasons, he's developed into a regular with San Jose.

Throughout his 24-year career, Whitney has appeared for various franchises, including the San Jose Sharks (1991–92), Edmonton Oilers (1997–01), and the Dallas Stars (1997–03).

Whitney signed a two-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes on August 6, 2005, earning him $1.5 million per year. Whitney, a native of Fort Saskatchewan, helped Carolina win their first Stanley Cup in 2005–06 in his first season with the Hurricanes.

Whitney completed a natural hat trick in less than 1 minute and 40 seconds on February 8, 2007.

Whitney re-signed with the Hurricanes on April 13, 2007, agreeing to a three-year deal that pays him $3.5 million per year.

Whitney signed a 2-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes on July 1, 2010.

Whitney is known for his comedic tendencies for doing such things as making sure he's on-screen during the interviewee and triggering the Hurricanes fans' favorite game "Where's Whitney"? His most popular nickname is "Wizard," which was first introduced by former Florida Panthers play-by-play commentator Jeff Rimer to him.

Whitney was the last remaining member of the San Jose Sharks inaugural team (1991–92) who played in the NHL until his retirement on January 21, 2015.

When Whitney registered an assist against the Anaheim Ducks on March 31, 2012, he became the 79th player in the NHL to score 1,000 regular-season points. He is currently 62nd in all-time points in the NHL as of the 2013-14 season.

Whitney signed a two-year, $9 million contract with the Dallas Stars on July 1, 2012.

He announced his retirement as an NHL player on January 21, 2015, capping his career after seeing 1,064 points (385-679) in 1,330 regular-season games. He was the best in points, assists, and games played for the entire 1991 NHL draft class at the time of his retirement.
