Go Ara (born February 11, 1990) is a South Korean actress and model.

She is best known for her appearances in the television series Sharp (2003), Reply 1994 (2013), You're All Surrounded (2014), The Poet Warrior Youth (2016–17), Black (2017) and Ms. (2000).

Early life and training

Go was born in Jinju, South Gyeongsang, South Korea. She walked around Korea at a young age because her father was a soldier. When she was in junior high, a friend had recommended that she apply for the talent company SM Entertainment. In 2003, she became the grand champion of the SM Entertainment Teen Model Competition.

Personal life

Go's company announced on March 7, 2019, that she ruptured her Anterior talofibular ligament during filming, causing her to be hospitalized.

In the 2003 KBS teen drama Sharp, Go was chosen to play Lee Ok-rim. Her role as a vivacious and confident middle school girl catapulted her to instant fame. She played in the sequel Sharp 2.

Go next appeared in the 2006 SBS Melodrama Snow Flower starring Kim Hee-ae. The Baeksang Arts Awards praised her portrayal of the rebellious and vivacious Yoo Da-mi.

Genghis Khan's first film, To the Ends of the Earth and Sea, which was released in Japan in March 2007. After being selected from more than 40,000 auditions, she portrayed Khulan, Genghis Khan's mistress. Due to her fluency in the language, Go was then cast in another Japanese film, Dance Subaru.

Who Are You? was a MBC drama cast in 2008. Yoon Kye-sang is the opposite. Despite poor ratings in Korea, the body swap comedy attracted international attention, raising her Korean Wave profile. This resulted in an appearance in the Japanese television drama Karei naru Spy.

She appeared in MBC's romantic comedy Heading to the Ground in 2009 with idol singer Jung Yunho from DBSK.

Go made her domestic film debut in 2012, where she gained 5 kilograms to play a pole vaulter for South Korea. With Park Yong-woo, she demonstrated her singing abilities in the 2012 multicultural film Papa. Go drew attention for her singing and dancing skills, fluent English, and acting appearance in the film.

Go's fame soared amid the nostalgic college drama of Reply 1994 (2013). She cut her hair short and gained 18 pounds in order to make her character Sung Na-jung. Although some people were concerned about her casting when it first revealed, Go's acting later earned praise both critically and with viewers. Go received Best Actress and APAN Star Awards for her appearance in the Baeksang Art Awards and APAN Star Awards. She then appeared as the sole female rookie detective in the 2014 police drama You're Surrounded, alongside Lee Seung-gi and Cha Seung-won.

Go back to the big screen in 2015 with Yoo Seung-ho's debut in The Magician, a joseon-era romance film in which she plays a princess who falls in love with a circus magician. This was followed by a prominent role in Phantom Detective, a neo-noir action film starring Lee Je-hoon as the titular Hong Gil-dong.

In 2016, Go played opposite Park Seo-joon in the youth historical drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. She left SM Entertainment after 13 years and joined a newly formed management company Artist Company in January 2017. She appeared in the fantasy thriller drama Black alongside Song Seung-heon, portraying a woman who can foresee death.

Go appeared in the film Ms. Hammurabi alongside Kim Myung-sooo in 2018, portraying a vivacious rookie judge. The series was well-received for its realistic portrayal of adversities in modern-day Korean society; and Gomo was lauded for her acting.

In 2019, Go played Haechi, a historical action drama starring a detective who is fluent in both martial arts and foreign languages.

Go played in the music romance film Do Sol Sol Sol Sol La La Sol La La Sol as a pianist who came to a crashing end after her family's demise.
