Rachel Elizabeth Brosnahan (born July 12, 1990) is an American actress.
Miriam "Midge" Maisel, the aspiring stand-up comedian on Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017-present), for which she received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Musical or Comedy in 2018 and two consecutive Golden Globe Awards for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series Musical or Comedy in 2019.

Early life
Brosnahan was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Carol and Earl Brosnahan, who worked in children's publishing. Her mother is British and her father is of Irish descent. Brosnahan was raised in Highland Park, Illinois, from the age of four. She has a younger brother and sister. Kate Spade (née Brosnahan) is a niece of late fashion designer Kate Spade (née Brosnahan).
Brosnahan herself is not of Jewish descent, despite being well-known for playing a Jewish character on television. She was "fully embedded" in Jewish history thanks to the people of Highland Park, Illinois, she says.
She attended Wayne Thomas Elementary School and Northwood Junior High School. During junior high and high school, she appeared in musical theater. She was on the wrestling team for two years and was a snowboarding coach at Highland Park High School. When she was 16 years old, she took a class with Carole Dibo, the director of Wilmette's Actors Training Center, who now serves as Brosnahan's boss. In 2012, Brosnahan graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
Personal life
Brosnahan had married actor Jason Ralph in 2018, but they later revealed in January 2019 that they had been married "for years" before their marriage became public. Both men were honored at the 76th Golden Globe Awards ceremony in 2019, where she thanked him during her acceptance address.
Brosnahan has twice completed the "Live Below the Line" challenge.
Career
Brosnahan was in high school for her first film role—that of Lisa in the Michael Bay-produced horror film The Unborn (2009). She appeared in single episodes of television series such as Gossip Girl, The Good Wife, Grey's Anatomy, and In Treatment in college. She debuted in films such as the crime thriller The Blacklist (2014) and the short-lived medical drama Black Box (2014) after college.
She appeared on stage in 2009, first in Up at Steppenwolf Theatre, and then in The Big Knife with Roundabout Theatre Company in 2013. She appeared in Desdemona in Othello at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2016 alongside David Oyelowo and Daniel Craig.
Rachel Posner appeared in the critically acclaimed Netflix political drama House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright in 2013. Although she was only scheduled for two episodes, she caught showrunner Beau Willimon's eye and her character was greatly expanded. Her work brought her career to a prestigious role, and she was recognized in a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
Allen, Elaine May, and Miley Cyrus appeared in Woody Allen's Amazon series Crisis in Six Scenes in 2016.
She has appeared in the Amazon period comedy series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel since 2017. She has said that growing up Jewish culture prepared her for the role of Midge Maisel, a 1950s Jewish housewife who pursues a career in stand-up comedy after her marriage breaks down. Among other awards, her appearance has earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series, two Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and two Critics' Choice Television Awards. Brosnahan's win of the Emmy Award also said that "the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's appeal with viewers is equal parts fantasy and reality." It has beautiful clothes and stunning sets. I believe it's aspirational in some respects. It's about a woman who is reinventing herself after completing the goal she had set out for herself. Everything falls apart; she finds herself anew. It's never too late to do so. And it's funny and, I believe, full of joy at its core, and that's something we need a lot more of in the world right now."
In January 2020, Brosnahan appeared in Benedict Cumberbatch's drama film The Courier. Amazon released I'm Your Woman, a film in which she appeared with Arinzé Kene in December 2020. She appeared in the western Dead for a Dollar, which premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in 2022.
In 2023, she is scheduled to appear in Lorraine Hansberry's Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window opposite Oscar Isaac at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
