Early life

Akin was born in Hamburg to Turkish parents. Cem Akin, his brother, is an actor. In 2000, he attended the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg to study visual communication, and graduated.

Since 2004, Akin has been married to German-Mexico actress Monique Obermüller. The couple live in Hamburg-Altona, close to where he was born. They have two children.

Career

Akin made his debut with Short Sharp Shock (Kurz und schmerzlos), a full-length film that earned him the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland and the Bavarian Film Award for Best New Director in Munich the same year. Since then, he has produced films such as In July (Im Juli) and Solino's in 2000 (Wir haben vergessen zurückzukehren).

Sibel Kekilli's fourth film, Head-On (Gegen die Wand), was a big success in 2004 and received multiple awards, including the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival and the "Best Film" award at the 2004 European Film Awards, among others.

He produced Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul, a documentary about Istanbul's music scene, starring artists such as Ceza, Sezen Aksu, Aynur Doan, and Brenna MacCrimmon. Alexander Hacke, a member of a German experimental band Einstürzende Neubauten, is the author of this book, who also produced Head-On's music.

The Edge of Heaven, a German-Turkish cross-cultural tale of loss, mourning, and forgiveness, received the award for Best Screenplay at the 60th Cannes Film Festival in 2007. The European Parliament awarded the first edition of the LUX award for European cinema on October 24, 2007.

He's enjoyed this more light-hearted film after making the "tough" films Head-On and The Edge of Heaven before deciding on his next planned film The Devil. "Now I feel excited to finish the trilogy," he says.

Polluting Paradise, his documentary film at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival in 2012, was screened in the Special Screenings section.

At the 71st Venice International Film Festival, his 2014 film The Cut was chosen to compete for the Golden Lion.

In 2017, Akin's film In the Fade was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in the main competition segment at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Diane Kruger received the Best Actress award at Cannes this year. The film was later named as the German entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards, advancing to the December shortlist. In the Fade, the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film was rewarded.
