Rohit Shetty Career

Career

Shetty began his film career at the age of 17 as an assistant director in Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgn's first film, Phool Aur Kaante. He then worked with Devgn in Suhaag (where he was a body double for another celebrity Akshay Kumar, the country's second main hero) and Haqeeqat, as well as Kumar in Zulmi. He then joined Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, Hindustan Ki Kasam, and Raju Chacha.

Shetty debuted as an independent filmmaker in 2003 with the Devgn starrer Zameen, an average grosser, before he came to prominence in 2006 as he produced the first part of Devgn's cult comedy series Golmaal, which was his first hit. His next two directorial films, the comedy thriller on Sunday and Golmaal Returns, as well as a Golmaal Returns, were released theatrically in 2008 and 2009, followed by All the Best: Fun Begins.

Golmaal 3 (again starring Devgn), which opened theatrically in 2010, ended up as Shetty's first and a surprising blockbuster in the 100 Crore Club domestically. Shetty started his Cop Universe in 2011 with his action film Singham (which also stars Abhishek Bachchan) and directed the comedy Bol Bachchan (which also stars Abhishek Bachchan); both films were huge hits and crossed 100 Crore Club nationally in 2012.

On August 9, 2013, Shetty's Chennai Express, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, was released. In the domestic market, Chennai Express became the highest-grossing Bollywood film. The film debuted over US$17.4 million to become the third-highest-grossing Bollywood film outside of the United States. The film also set a number of box office records for the largest opening-day gross, highest paid preview, highest single-day gross, most high opening weekend, and the fastest film to reach 100 crore and 2 billion in the domestic market.

Shetty has been the judge of a television program titled Comedy Circus.

Shetty directed Singham Returns with Ajay Devgn, a sequel to his 2011 film Singham. He appeared on the 5th season of television stunt game show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi in 2014, as the host taking over from previous host Akshay Kumar. With Singham Returns, he turned into a producer, co-producing the film under his banner Rohit Shetty Productions in 2014. Sharukh Khan and Kajol produced Dilwale (2015 film), which is a box office hit and has been directed by him. Khatron Ke Khiladi's host appeared in season 6 and 8.11 of Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi.

Golmaal Again, Shetty's fourth film in the Golmaal series, was directed by Shetty. In October 2017, the film, starring Ajay Devgn and Parineeti Chopra, received mixed reviews. It was the first Hindi blockbuster of 2017, as well as the first grossing Diwali release of all time. Ranveer Singh, Sara Ali Khan, and Sonu Sood appeared in lead roles in Simmba's 2018 action comedy Simmba, with Ajay Devgn appearing in a guest appearance as Bajirao Singham. It received mixed feedback and became one of the year's best grossing films. For Amazon Prime Video, Shetty will make his YouTube debut with Indian Police Force starring Sidharth Malhotra.
