Uwe Boll Life

Uwe Boll (German: [uvbl]; born June 22, 1965) is a German filmmaker. He rose to fame in the 2000s for his video game franchise reimaginings. The films were both critical and commercial failures when they were released theatrically; Alone in the Dark version of 2005 is considered one of the worst films ever made. Boll's films during the 2010s, which mainly original projects and independent films, saw increased success in home media, but mostly critical feedback. Boll, who resigned in 2016 to become a restaurateur, has announced his return to filmmaking in 2020. Boll KG and Event Film Productions sponsor his films.

Early life

Boll was born in Wermelskirchen and studied at the University of Cologne. He earned a PhD; in 1994, he published a dissertation (doctorate thesis) at the University of Siegen.

Boll first decided to go into film at ten years old after seeing Marlon Brando's Mutiny on the Bounty.

Personal life

Boll used to live in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He now lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. Despite being in Canada for many years, he still has his German citizenship. In 2014, he married Canadian film producer Natalia Tudge. They have a son and a stepson together, as well as a cat.

Uwe Boll Career

Career

Boll's first two major launches were Blackwoods and the tragedy Heart of America, both of which he directed and co-wrote.

He received awards for loosely converting video games into films, including House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, and Far Cry 2: The Last Mission, Postal, and Far Cry.

Boll used footage of animal abuse and torture from PETA to illustrate the film's nihilism in the opening credits. He also promised to donate 2.5 percent of his net income from Seed to PETA.

A trailer for Boll's film Auschwitz, which was released on YouTube in September 2010, was posted. Boll appears as a SS gas chamber guard, and the trailer depicts violent torture and execution of concentration camp prisoners. Boll has been quoted as saying that films such as Schindler's List "no longer had the ability to reach young people and that it was his responsibility as a German to make the film as a way of confronting the past."

Boll was the subject of a documentary film called Raging Boll, directed by Dan West, which premiered at the Austin Film Festival in October 2010.

It was revealed in March 2012 that he had completed directing a short horror story for The Profane Exhibit, an anthology film. The tale, which was influenced by Josef Fritzl, follows parents with a daughter in a cell where they can partake in immoral acts against her.

Boll's fourth entry in the BloodRayne franchise set in a modern setting where she is struggling to live a normal life. Natassia Malthe was expected to return, and she was supposed to be loosely based on the video game BloodRayne 2.

Boll revealed plans to produce a sequel to Postal in August 2013, based on a Kickstarter campaign. However, the campaign was ended on October 5th, 2013.

Boll announced his retirement from filmmaking in October 2016, primarily citing the decrease in DVD and Blu-ray sales, implying that he had to use his own money to finance his own production since 2005.

He still works as a film director as of 2017. In February 2018, he announced in his vlog that he intends to return to film and that he has sent Netflix invites. However, he no longer needs to fund his schemes.

Boll was the subject of Sean Patrick Shaul's second documentary film, Fuck You All: The Uwe Boll Story, which premiered at the 2018 Whistler Film Festival.

Boll said in October 2020 that he wanted to return to filmmaking and announced Rampage IV: The New Blood and Germany as his next projects in development.

Boll's films have often failed at the box office in the United States and around the world. House of the Dead, which was budgeted at $12 million, made $5.73 million in its first weekend, Alone in the Shadow, which was budgeted at $20 million, and BloodRayne, which was made for $25 million, made $2.42 million. In the Name of the King, the King's least profitable commercial success of his career, earned less than $60 million worldwide on a $60 million budget.

Boll's DVD commentary explains how he funds his films: "Maybe you do know it, but it isn't so straightforward to finance movies in total." And here's why I'm able to do these kind of movies: I have a tax shelter fund in Germany, and if you buy a movie in Germany, you get just over half of the government.

Boll has received a lot of negative feedback about this funding strategy, owing to a loophole in the German tax laws that was finally closed in 2006.

Boll has written two books, Wie man in Deutschland drehen must (How one makes a movie in Germany) and Die Gattung Serie undigegen - On serial television, Boll has written two books, including Wie man in Germany) and Its Genres (How one makes a film in Germany).
