Career
Tykwer moved to Berlin, where he worked as a project manager. He became the programmer of the Moviemento cinema in 1987 and became known to German directors as a film buff. Tykwer met and befriended filmmaker Rosa von Praunheim, who encouraged him to produce tales from his own experience in Berlin. For example, he suggested that Tykwer record arguments with his wife and turn them into a short film. Because (1990) was shown at the Hof International Film Festival and enthusiastically accepted by the audience, Tykwer was inspired to continue filmmaking.
Epilog (1992), his second short film, for which he took on personal debt, but he also acquired valuable technical film making experience. Tykwer wrote the screenplay for and produced his first film, Deadly Maria (1993). It aired on German television and had a limited theatrical distribution in Germany and the international film festival circuit.
Tykwer founded X Filme Creative Pool in 1994 with Stefan Arndt, Wolfgang Becker, and Dani Levy.
When working on Winter Sleepers (1997), Tykwer and Becker wrote the screenplay for Life Is All You Get (1997), Tykwer's second feature and a more complicated production than Deadly Maria. Tykwer attracted the attention of German cineastes and film festivals, but the winter sleepers were struggling financially.
Run Lola Run (1998), Tykwer's next feature film, became the most influential German film of 1998, grossing $7 million at the US box office and bringing the film to international prominence. Tykwer was already at work on his forthcoming film, The Princess and the Warrior (2000), a love story about a nurse and a former soldier shot in his hometown town of Wuppertal, as Lola was a success worldwide.
Miramax produced Heaven (2002), based on a screenplay by Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kielowski, starred Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi, and was shot in Turin and Tuscany.
French producers invited Tykwer to film a short film based on 20 short films of many famous directors depicting love in Paris. True is a 10-minute short film starring Natalie Portman and Melchior Beslon. He shot the film with nary apprehension. "Symbolizes an entire life for me in ten minutes," Tykwer later said.
Tykwer filmed Pink Children (2012) alongside 4 German producers about their mentor Rosa von Praunheim.
Tykwer's next film was an adaptation of the German novelist Patrick Süskind's Perfume. It was shot in Figueras, Girona, and Barcelona, Spain. Tykwer made his Hollywood debut with the big-budgeted 2009 conspiracy thriller The International, starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts, was shot in many locations, including Berlin, Milan, New York City, and Istanbul. Both the public and critics alike expressed skepticism about the film's lukewarm reception.
A Hologram for the King, directed by Tykwer in 2016, starring Tom Hanks and Sarita Choudhury and based on a book by American novelist Dave Eggers, was released in 2016. Tykwer co-created the television show Babylon Berlin, writing and directing the screenplay; the series, which was set in 1920s Berlin, has 16 episodes in its first two seasons. In 2020, a third season will premiere.
