Fat Mike Life

Michael John Burkett (born January 31, 1967), also known as Fat Mike, is an American singer and producer.

He is the bassist and lead vocalist for the punk rock band NOFX, as well as the bassist and lead vocalist for the punk rock supergroup cover band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.

Fat Mike formed False Alarm in 1982, his first band.

Personal life

Burkett lives in Sherman Oaks, California. He attended college at San Francisco State University and graduated in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in Social Science and a minor in Human Sexuality. Burkett has said he received the moniker "Fat Mike" from "one of the guys from [the band] Subculture," according to the book NOFX. He is a member of Jewish origins but is an atheist.

After 18 years of marriage, he and his wife Erin divorced in 2010. Darla is their daughter. Mike appeared on the documentary The Other F Word, an investigation of punk rock fatherhood in October 2009.

Fat Mike used to own Thistle Hill Tavern, a gastropub-style restaurant in Brooklyn, NY's Park Slope neighborhood. He has been involved in BDSM for years: he has had a dungeon in his house. Fat Mike has a number of tattoos, one on his left arm that features a golfing dominatrix and her tied caddy. When referring to the NOFX song Fuck Euphemism for which he wrote the lyrics, he discussed how he describes himself as queer: "I live a BDSM lifestyle and I'm a crossdresser, so it did bother me when people called me a cis male." I like the whole process of defining yourself using your own terms because I'm a punk rocker first and then a subordinate crossdressing male. The transgender group and the gay community are taking a stand on how we want to be known, and I'm going to be identified in a certain way."

On January 28, 2014, Fat Mike revealed his engagement to Soma Snakeoil, a female film actor. Mike and Soma were separated in August 2017.

He has been vocal about his terminally ill mother's death, including the incident in "La Pieta" which is included in NOFX's audiobook version of The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories.

Burkett introduced Fatale, a pant brand directed at guys, in 2014.

Fat Mike had complained about a neck injury and had requested that the audience not to throw objects at him and grab him while on stage, causing him pain on November 5, 2014. A fan climbed onstage and put his arm around Mike's neck, prompting Mike to collapse and punch him in the chest while kicking him in the chest. The fan had bruising on his face, but there were no significant injuries. Fat Mike and the fan later apologised on Twitter. Mike was shown a video of him offering the fan a beer and a custom T-shirt and then yelling him with a fluffy slipper as an apology.

Fat Mike Career

Musical career

Mike began his musical journey with the band False Alarm while attending Beverly Hills High School. Eric Melvin and Erik Sandin formed the original line-up of NOFX after the band split up in 1983. He has also appeared on a variety of other bands' albums, including "Peter Brady" on Screeching Weasel's 1993 album Anthem for a New Tomorrow. "Beware" by Randy, "Mr. Coffee," and "Lazy" by Lagwagon are among Randy's appearances. Mike can also be heard yelling and requesting "Free Bird" at the end of the Lunachicks' album "Missed It" (1996), which he also produced, on their 1996 album, Pretty Ugly, which he also produced. On the Dropkick Murphys album "Going Out In Style," he appears as a guest vocalist. Fat Wreck Chords' owner and founder Mike Wreck Chords.

Mike Cokie the Clown EP with NOFX, who appeared Cokie on both the front page and the music video for the title track, "Cokie the Clown." Mike stars in the video as Cokie and incorporates white powder into his squirting flower, which he describes as "my own unique blend of X, coke, and K." As a staple in the song itself, Cokie walks around Chicago squirting powder in pedestrians' faces. The video was shot during the punk music festival Riot Fest.

Fat Mike has appeared on several occasions as Cokie the Clown, but Emo's, a famous nightclub in Austin, was one of his most memorable performances at the South by Southwest festival on March 20, 2010. He recalled several graphic and troubling tales about his personal life and performed many songs that had never been released or unreleased. He tricked several people of the audience into consuming tequila before showing them a video of him filling a partially empty bottle of tequila to the top with urine to stunned reactions. Fat Mike switched out the urine bottle for an uninhibited one on NOFX's website, prompting audience members to drink it. Mike has since been barred from Emo's. However, Mike's autobiography confirms that the urine was indeed served to the audience.

Home Street Home, Mike's debut in 2015, was co-wrote with Soma Snakeoil and Jeff Marx.

Fat Mike's Welcome is a single album released in 2019. Fat Mike as Cokie, as well as Dizzy Reed (Guns N Roses) and Travis Barker appear on the album (blink 182).
