Career
MacKaye has participated in independent and underground media and appeared in rare venues throughout his career. Admission prices are kept low (in the US$5–$15 range) and are open to fans of all ages and genders to attend performances. Maintaining a low overhead and safeguarding financial assets are also critical for MacKaye, who formed Lunar Atrocities Ltd in the summer of 1990 in order to shield his own and his bandmates' personal assets from lawsuit risk. In a 1993 interview with Seth Martin, MacKaye's financial advisor, wrote to the Washington Post: "Protection from liability is the primary reason to form a company, and for these guys it makes sense." It will be a little difficult to go after someone's personal money if they were hurt stage-diving and decided to sue."
MacKaye has also been known to rebuke concert violence and chastise crowd surfers and other unruly concert attendees who are about to begin fighting. This is particularly true of his time with Futura. When audience members became belligerent or vehement at a Fugazi show, they would no longer perform (sometimes right in the middle of a song) and MacKaye would warn them not to play (sometimes right in the middle of a performance). If those people's deviant conduct continued, their admission fee would be refunded and have them ejected from the concert stage.
MacKaye helped Alan Canfora, a former Kent State University undergraduate who was injured by a gunshot while protesting the US invasion of Cambodia in 1970, when protesting the US invasion of Cambodia. MacKaye recovered a field recording of another student's attack. A voice can be heard on the tape yelling, "Right here!" Canfora says.
