Mike Muir Life

Michael Allen "Mike" Muir (born March 14, 1963) is the lead vocalist of the Venice, California crossover thrash bands Suicidal Tendencies, Los Cycos, and Infectious Grooves.

Cyco Miko has since released several solo albums under his name.

Muir's trademark is wearing bandanas, jerseys, and hats with block style letters that read "suicidal."

Early life

Mike Muir, the younger brother of Dogtown's Jim Muir, was born in Venice, Los Angeles, and raised in Santa Monica. Jim introduced Mike to metal music as well as skateboarding. After being kicked out of school in the tenth grade, Muir joined Santa Monica College.

Personal life

In 2003, Muir underwent his first of two back surgeries for a ruptured, herniated disc. The other, who died in 2005, caused him to postpone Brazilian festival dates and Suicidal shows. Muir is married and has three children. After being in Queensland, Australia, for a brief period of time, he returned to the United States in early 2011.

Monster House on the Discovery Channel turned his house into a "horror house."

On March 7, 1996, Muir defeated Simon Woodstock in a celebrity boxing match on the Action Sports network. Muir lost to Woodstock.

Muir is known for his outspokenness in regards to both music industry and society. He has long been an advocate of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), and has often expressed opposition to the organization (such as "You Can't Take Me Down" and "Lovely"). During the European Clash of the Titans tour, Muir was involved in a near-violent feud with Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine, but the two have since reconciled and are now on friendly terms.

Muir has sluggishly criticized Rage Against the Machine, a band that is best known for expressing anti-corporate, left-wing politics in their songs, but the band has also signed Epic Records, a Sony subsidiary. "Do What I Tell Ya," an infectious Grooves song. "The band is mocked on their album Groove Family Cyco," the band says. Rage Against the Machine's guitarist, Tom Morello, reportedly sparked the conflict by attacking Suicidal Tendencies, according to Muir.

Muir has said he has never used opioids and does not drink alcohol.

Mike Muir Career

Career

Muir has cited bands like the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Van Halen, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Led Zeppelin, and Kiss as his early musical influences, and has said that he was introduced to funk music by former bandmate Robert Trujillo. Muir incorporated funk influences into a few songs by Suicidal Tendencies and his funk metal side project, Infectious Grooves.

When he was 17 years old, Muir formed Suicidal Tendencies in 1980. It began with Muir on vocals, Mike Ball on guitar, Carlos "Egie" Egert on drums, and Mike Dunnigan on bass. Before Muir recruited Grant Estes, Louiche Mayorga, and Amery Smith on guitar, bass, and drums respectively, there were several lineup changes. They released their self-titled album in 1983, with success sparked by the anthem song "Institutionalized" becoming one of the first hardcore punk videos to receive significant airplay on MTV. They have since appeared on tours and festivals around the world. Suicidal Tendencies' first guitarist, Mike Clark, was hired in 1987 as the band's second guitarist, and later added funk influences to their music. Robert Trujillo, the bassist for Suicidal Tendencies from 1989 to 1995, was instrumental in the introduction of Muir to funk music, and the pair would later form Infectious Grooves to perform more funk oriented music.

Suicidal Tendencies, one of the most influential crossover thrash bands, existed until 1995, but a year later, they reunited. Suicidal Tendencies has been touring or performing select shows almost every year, and until the 2013 release of their ninth studio album 13, they had not released an album containing new music in over a decade. The band had performed new songs on stage and in compilation collections from the 13 releases of Free Your Soul and Save My Mind and 13.

During Suicidal's first year of their four-year recording hiatus, Muir formed Los Cycos in 1984. Jon Nelson, the current guitarist, and Suicidal Tendencies were barred from attending L.A. shows largely due to an incident at Perkins Palace, where their audience ripped out the first ten rows, effectively ending the possibility for promoters to buy insurance if Suicidal was on the bill. With bassist Louiche Mayorga, Muir formed Suicidal Records. Mike Muir (vocals), Bob Heathcote (bass), Anthony "Bob" Gallo (guitars), and Amery Smith (drums) were among Los Cycos' founding members. Amery Smith and bandmate Jon Nelson left the band to form their own band (the Brood) after a few rehearsals. Grant Estes on lead guitar, Gallo (rhythm), and Bob Heathcote and Amery Smith were replaced by Louiche Mayorga (bass) and No Mercy's Sal Troy, who were both drums. Rehearsals' work on Suicidal Records' "Welcome to Venice" continued in preparation for their debut on Suicidal Records' "Welcome to Venice." Los Cycos was born with the final line-up and two songs "It's Not Easy" and "A Little Each Day" ad. "Welcome to Venice" was the first record to be released on Suicidal Records, and the collection also featured local Venice, Los Angeles bands Suicidal Tendencies, Beowülf, No Mercy, and Excel. The original masters were unfortunately lost in a fire, and no attempt has been made to broadcast the information digitally. "Look Up (The Boys are Back) and "It's Not Easy" are two of Mike Muir's vocals on the Suicidencies cut "Look Up (The Boys Are Back), as well as the Los Angeles track "It's Not Easy." On the albums, Grant Estes played all guitars.

Muir has released solo albums under the name Cyco Miko and has performed for No Mercy, replacing original singer Kevin Guercio, who appeared for the band on the Welcome to Venice compilation. Cyco Miko's three albums on the record label Suicidal Records were released. The album Schizophrenic Born Again Child was released in 2001, following on the 1996's Lost My Brain! (Once More). In October 2011, a new Cyco Miko album was released worldwide, featuring previously unreleased and newly written tracks from Cyco Miko, Suicidal Tendencies, and Infectious Grooves. The album "The Mad Mad Muir Musical Tour - Part 1" featured current Suicide Tendencies band members as well as performances by Fletcher Dragge, Robert Trujillo, Brooks Wackerman, bassist Thundercat (Stephen Bruner) and saxophonist Kamasi Washington. On Suicidal Records, No Mercy has only released one album with Muir, Widespread Bloodshed/Love Runs Red.

Muir and Trujillo, a funk metal band that often performed a goofier form of humour, formed Infectious Grooves, a goofy funk metal band that performed comedy skits by Aladdin Sarsippius Sulemenagic Jackson III. The Infectious Grooves have released four albums to date.

Excel's 1989 debut album Split Image was produced by a Muir executive.

Muir appeared on the P.O.D. From their 2008 album When Angels & Serpents Dance, the song "Kaliforn-Eye-A" appears.

Muir, Tim Armstrong (Rancid), Matt Freeman (Rancid), Fletcher Dragge (Pennywise), and Byron McMacken (Pennywise) formed The Crew, a punk rock supergroup formed in May 2021. "One Voice," the band's first single, was released on Epitaph Records.
