Club career

Ederson, a native of Osasco, S. Paulo, began his football career in 2008 with local team So Paulo FC, where he spent one season before joining Benfica in Portugal. He spent two years as a junior before moving to Ribeiro in 2011. He joined Rio Ave. in Primeira Liga a year later. He officially signed a Rio Ave. deal in summer 2012. Following a string of good performances and a call to the Brazil under-23 squad, he agreed to a new deal with the club that would run until 2014.

Ederson returned to Portugal on June 27, 2015, defeating Benfica for the first time. In July, then officially agreed to a five-year deal with the club as a result of €500,000, as well as a €45 million release clause. Rio Ave will keep half of the upcoming keeper's financial rights. Ederson got off to a second line for the first team in the 2015–16 season, after compatriot and international Jlio César stood in his defence. Ederson appeared in the Segunda Liga for the reserve team and in the Taça da Liga with the main squad before playing in the Primeira Liga against local rival Sporting CP on March 5, 2016. Benfica took the Lisbon derby 0–1 for the first time in Primeira Liga, where they took first place. He would then be part of eleven more victories that would crown Benfica's 35th league championship, their third in a row. He appeared in the Taça da Liga final against Martimo, which Benfica beat 62-0. In addition, he appeared in three matches in the Champions League season, where Benfica reached the quarter-finals. He and Benfica trebled Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal, and Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira in his first season.

Ederson had signed Premier League Manchester City for £35 million (€40 million), according to Benfica on June 1st. The transfer made him the second most expensive goalkeeper of all time, after Gianluigi Buffon's (£33 million), but it wasn't the first time in euros (€52 million in 2017) until Kepa Arrizabalaga's (€80 million in 2018). Ederson was activated as Pep Guardiola's first choice goalkeeper, supplanting Claudio Bravo. Ederson was forced to leave the game after eight minutes of recovery after suffering a kick to the face against Liverpool on September 9th. Ederson was stitched out, and Mané was suspended for the next three matches after being ruled out by referee Jon Moss. Ederson got off to a good start in the Champions League against Feyenoord the following week, sporting a piece of protective headgear. Ederson thought Mané's accident was accidental and accepted the Liverpool player's apology.

Ederson became the first Manchester City goalkeeper to play in a Premier League assist in a 6–1 victory over Huddersfield Town on August 19, 2018.

After a 5–0 home victory over Norwich City on June 26, 2020, Ederson was awarded the Golden Glove for keeping the most clean sheets (16) in the 2019-20 Premier League season.

International career

Ederson was drafted in Brazil's provisional squad for Copa América Centenary, but he was forced to withdraw from the final squad due to illness. In a 2018 World Cup qualifier, he made his national team debut in defeating Chile 3–0. In May 2018, he was named in Tite's final 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia.

Ederson was selected in Brazil's 23-man squad for the 2019 Copa América in May 2019.

In a 4–0 victory over Peru in June 2021, he made his major tournament debut for Brazil, starting and keeping a clean sheet. He began with a 1–0 loss to Argentina in the final on July ten years ago.
