Donald "Don" Cannon (born August 2, 1979) is an American DJ, producer, songwriter, and music industry executive who is a co-founder of Generation Now, the Atlantic Records imprint.

With his long-time collaborator and fellow Generation Now founder DJ Drama, he was also a member of the influential Atlanta mixtape group Aphilliates Music Group.

Cannon has produced tracks and albums for artists such as Jeezy, Logic, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Wayne, Ludacris, 50 Cent, and many others throughout his career.

He also served as Vice President of A&R at Def Jam Recordings.

Don Cannon Career

Career

Cannon, DJ Drama, and DJ Sense co-founded the Aphilliates Music Group (AMG) in Atlanta in 2003. Cannon used to record tracks on DJ Drama's most popular mixtape series, Gangsta Grillz, which featured artists such as Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, Ludacris, Fabolous, T.I., and many others.

Some of Cannon's most notable early production credits with Aphilliates included Jeezy's "Go Crazy," 50 Cent's "Man Down," and Ludacris' "Everybody Hates Chris." Cannon helped create a mixtape series like Lil Wayne's Dedication, T.I. In da Streets, and Jeezy's Trap or Die, P$C. Shade 45, who will co-host a show on Atlanta's WHTA, as well as a music director for the show Streets Iz Watchin on Sirius XM Radio station Shade 45, is a man who plays in the NBA. Good Day Atlanta, the Fox affiliate in Atlanta, has also named him "Atlanta's Best DJ."

The Aphilliates Music Group began a strategic collaboration with Asylum Records in September 2006. However, Aphilliates' Atlanta offices were searched by local police in January 2007, as well as RICO allegations, including Cannon and DJ Drama. In the raid, the authorities confiscated 81,000 mixtapes and other pieces of recording equipment.

Following the raid and others like it, public outcry was generated in the aftermath, with some music industry insiders describing the RIAA and its constituent members as "schizophrenic." At the time, Aphilliates had largely operated with the express permission of major record labels, because AMG helped promote their artists. No one from Cannon or DJ Drama was ever arrested in connection with the crash.

In December 2008, Cannon announced his resignation from the Aphilliates, choosing instead to concentrate on his own production and promotion firm, Cannon Music, LLC. In 2009, he wrote the theme tune for Tyler Perry's TBS sitcom House of Payne. He also created season themes for the Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Thrashers. Cannon made, mixed, and/or hosted numerous mixtapes and tracks for artists like Big Sean, such as Cannon's (Finally Famous Vol. 3: The Cool Kids (Gone Fishing), Curren$y (Smokee Robinson), Jeezy (Trap or Die II), Trouble (Green Light), and Lil Reese (Don't Like; hosted with DJ Drama).

Cannon was named Vice President of A&R at Def Jam Recordings in July 2013. Since being on the label, he has been accused of signing and fostering many artists. Cannon reunited with DJ Drama and DJ Sense in August 2013 to co-found The Academy, a new media group. The Academy unveiled its initial roster of 23 DJs in September of this year.

Generation Now, Cannon and DJ Drama's joint venture, was launched in 2015 by Cannon and DJ Drama as an imprint of Atlantic Records. Lil Uzi Vert was one of the first artists to sign that year. Luv Is Rage, Cannon's debut commercial mixtape, was released by the artist in 2015. He also appeared on Uzi's 2017 studio album, Luv Is Rage 2, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Skeme, Jack Harlow, Lil James, and Killumantii are among the many artists signed to Cannon and Drama.
