Early life
Nicholas Theodore Nemeth was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 27, 1980. He has been a fan of professional wrestling since he was five years old, and he became a professional wrestler at the Richfield Coliseum at age 12. On Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling Podcast, he chose "Dolph" because it was his great-grandfather's name, and his friend suggested the surname "Ziggler." Nemeth was a student wrestler at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio, where he held the school record for most pins in a career as 82 years old. He was a St. Edward fellow with Gray Maynard and Andy Hrovat.
The wrestling team won the National Championships on two occasions during his time in St. Edward. He was a wrestler at Kent State University and went on to set a record for the most career victories in the team's history. His record was broken in 2006, but he now ranks second in all-time victories at Kent State as of 2010. Between 2000 and 2003, he won 121 times in his career. With a pre-law minor, he concentrated in political science. He had been accepted to the law school at Arizona State University, where he was set to begin his first semester, prior to his WWE tryout. In three years, Nemeth has won the NCAA Division I wrestling championships in a row. He was a three-time All-Mid-American Conference champion, winning the 165 lb (75 kg) tournament in 2000, 2002, and 2003; as of 2010, he is the last wrestler from Kent State University to have won three amateur wrestling championships.
Personal life
Nemeth lives in Phoenix, Arizona. He is a huge fan of the Cleveland Browns.
Nemeth has two brothers. Ryan, his younger brother, is now a professional wrestler who competed with WWE in NXT under the ring name Briley Pierce. After pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, kidnapping, and robbery for his part in a botched robbery attempt that resulted in the death of a former Marine in January 2016, his older brother, Donald, was sentenced to 15 years in jail.
Nemeth is a good friend with his former Spirit Squad teammates, especially Michael Brendli, who lived in Florida until 2008. He dated comedian Amy Schumer, who ended up with him because she thought he was "too athletic" in bed.
Nemeth is fluent in American Sign Language.
Professional wrestling career
In 2004, Nemeth agreed to a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). "Nick Nemeth" was given to their new territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). On August 12, 2005, he feuded with Paul Burchill and auditioned unsuccessfully for the OVW Television Championship, losing a championship match against then-champion Ken Doane.
Nemeth was called up to the Raw crew shortly after, making his television debut on Sunday Night Heat's September 19, 2005 episode. Chavo Guerrero Jr., who was wearing a golfer in-ring appearance and going by the ring name of "Kerwin White," was made the enforcer and sidekick for him. Nemeth became White's caddie as a result. He made his wrestling debut on Sunday Night Heat, teaming up with White against Shelton Benjamin and Matt Striker in a tag team match. Chavo Guerrero's death, Eddie Guerrero's "Kerwin White" was no longer a role, and Nemeth no longer played the role of his caddie and tag partner. He was returned to OVW after a few months of wrestling in dark matches and at home shows.
Nemeth joined the Spirit Squad group, a group of five wrestlers who used the male cheerleader's in-ring personas, and in 2005, she adopted the word Nicky in OVW. To ensure their characters were realistic, Spirit Squad members were trained with real cheerleaders and gymnasts. They made their WWE debut as a group on January 23, 2006, when Jonathan Coachman defeated Jerry "The King" Lawler in a Royal Rumble qualifying match against Jerry "The King" Lawler by cheering for Coachman and distracting Lawler. They became involved in the ongoing scripted feud between WWE chairman Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels. On several occasions, McMahon sent Michaels to assault Michaels, including placing them in various handicap matches.
They also competed in the tag team division, and Kenny and Mikey defeated Big Show and Kane on Raw on April 3, and they then progressed to the World Tag Team Championship on Raw. All five members of the Spirit Squad were named champions after winning the championship, allowing any combination of them to defend the country under Freebird Rule.
McMahon played in another Handicap match against Michaels in May. The match never started, but instead the Spirit Squad attacked Michaels, and the storyline ended with him shattering his knee with a steel chair. McMahon brought Triple H to the ring to assault Michaels with a sledgehammer, but the Squad had disregarded him, and McMahon attacked the squad. Triple H and Michaels were instrumental in the reforming of D-Generation X (DX) and sparked a rivalry with the Spirit Squad, XD). DX performed several sophomoric jokes on the Squad and the McMahons, as well as defeating the Spirit Squad in handicap tag team matches at Vengeance and a clean sweep in an elimination handicap match on Saturday Night's Main Event XXIII.
The Squad also wrestled other teams in Raw's tag division over their World Tag Team Championship, winning the championship against Jim Duggan, Eugene, Charlie Haas and Viscera's teams, as well as Val Venis and Snitsky and Val Venis. They followed a long rivalry with The Highlanders, who they eventually lost to keep the championship at the Unforgiven pay-per-view on September 17. The Squad as a whole began losing on consecutive episodes of Raw, with separate members losing singles matches to Ric Flair, before Kenny managed to defeat him on October 23. The team then announced that Flair and a WWE legend, who had been chosen by online voting, would battle the team for the World Tag Team Championship on Sunday. The fans selected Roddy Piper, and the two teams defeated Kenny and Mikey to win the championship at the Fall Festival on November 5.
On the November 27 episode of Raw, the group disbanded when they were defeated in a five-on-three handicap match between DX and Flair. All members were rolled into a crate stamped "OVW, Louisville, Kentucky," a reference to the Squad's geographical area from which the Squad had originated in a backstage segment later that night.
Nemeth, the television tapings, and Mike Mondo, formerly Mikey in the Spirit Squad, as the "Frat Pack," as the "Frat Pack" was returned to OVW on January 17, 2007. In a match against Seth Skyfire, Shawn Spears, and Cody Runnels, the pair teamed up with Mike Kruel. In the early parts of 2007, the team was disbanded. Before the OVW television tapings, Nemeth competed in several dark matches, including Chris Cage, Bradley Jay, and Jake Hager, before joining Mondo for the first time in August.
Nemeth and Mike Mondo were relocated to the Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) developmental territory in August, and Nemeth's debut there earned the nickname "The Natural" and defeated Hade Vansen. Nemeth hired Big Rob as their boss in November 2007, but the relationship was short lived. He changed his name to "Nic Nemeth" and began working with Brad Allen, with Taryn Terrell as their valet at the start of 2008. With Terrell as a sorority girl, Nemeth and Allen created a frat boy type ring figure. Nemeth and Allen captured the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship on March 22, defeating defending champion Eddie Colón and Eric Pérez, but Colón and Pérez lost the championship to Colón and Pérez on April 15. Nemeth competed in several dark matches before coming out tumbling to Kofi Kingston and Ron Killings on several occasions during April and May 2008. He renamed "Nic Nemeth" shortly after and began working with Gavin Spears shortly thereafter. The pair won the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship against Colón and Pérez on August 16, but Heath Miller and Joe Hennig took the crown less than a month later.
Nemeth re-debuted on Raw (as a heel), debuting himself in a backstage segment under the name "Dolph Ziggler" on September 15, 2008. Nemeth was banned for 30 days for breaching WWE's Wellness Policy guidelines on October 10. He returned to Raw on November 17 for a backstage interview with Rey Mysterio and Shawn Michaels. He lost to Batista in his first match on Raw under the Ziggler name. Ziggler's first victory over R-Truth came next week. When he defeated Charlie Haas next week, he won his first televised pinfall victory on Raw. At the eponymous 2009 game, Ziggler would face Kane after 21 seconds, but he would not qualify for the Royal Rumble match.
As part of the 2009 Supplemental Draft, Ziggler was drafted to the SmackDown brand on April 15, 2009. He made his debut on SmackDown on April 17, defeating Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP) in a non-title match, and as a result, the following week he requested a match for the championship. On the May 1 episode of SmackDown, however, he failed to win the championship after being pinned by MVP. After destroying Khali with a steel chair, Ziggler ignited a rivalry with The Great Khali, losing by disqualification to him. As a result, Khali began to compete during and after Ziggler's matches in an attempt to regain revenge and stop Ziggler from cheating. Ziggler will defeat Khali by countout and disqualification over the next two weeks, making it appear that Khali had struck him with a steel chair. Ziggler defeated Khali in a No Disqualification match by pinfall at The Bash pay-per-view on June 28, after Kane interfered and assaulted Khali.
After Ziggler began an on-screen relationship with WWE Diva Maria, she became his valet. Rey Mysterio, the Intercontinental Champion who defeated Ziggler at Night of Champions on July 26, and SummerSlam on August 23, started a scripted rivalry with Intercontinental Champion Rey Mysterio, who retained the title against SummerSlam on August 26 and September 23. Mysterio won the Intercontinental Championship to John Morrison in September, and Ziggler became a feud with Morrison after defeating him by countout in a non-title match, but lost to him at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view on October 4. Ziggler ended his on-screen friendship with Maria after she mistakenly cost him a match against Morrison for the Intercontinental Championship. Ziggler made a public appearance at Breaking Point on September 13, during whom Ziggler attacked Patterson before Morrison made the save. On the November 13 episode of SmackDown, he failed to win the Intercontinental Championship from Morrison twice, bringing him to a double count out and losing a two-out-of-three falls match the following week to bring an end to the feud. On the XXVI episode of SmackDown, Ziggler defeated John Morrison and R-Truth in a triple threat qualifying match against money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXVI on February 26, 2010, but the match was ultimately unsuccessful.
Vickie Guerrero, who was accompanying him to the ring in June 2010, began a romantic taleline with him in June 2010. For the first time, SmackDown Ziggler defeated Kofi Kingston on the tapings of the August 6 episode of SmackDown Ziggler, defeating him in the WWE Intercontinental Championship for the first time. He retained the title against Kingston on August 15, but it was not a no contest due to interference from The Nexus in his first title defense at SummerSlam. On September 19, and on November 21, Ziggler was able to make a good title defense against Kingston at the Night of Champions pay-per-view and against Kaval at Survivor Series. Ziggler was selected as a Pro for the fourth season of NXT, with Jacob Novak as his Rookie. Ziggler won the right to choose a new rookie on January 4, 2011, and chose Byron Saxton. Ziggler made the World Heavyweight Championship that night a four-way match against Cody Rhodes, Drew McIntyre, and Big Show. In his title match against Edge, Ziggler was dissatisfied with the outcome. In a losing battle against Edge and Randy Orton, he teamed up with WWE Champion The Miz on January 28, a losing proposition. Vickie Guerrero, the acting General Manager of SmackDown, banned the spear and determined that if Edge used it, Ziggler would win the championship. On the February 11 episode of SmackDown, Ziggler was defeated again by Edge, but Guerrero declared Ziggler the new champion, but the Ziggler was still champion on the February 14 episode of Raw. Guerrero fired Edge several weeks before Ziggler's formal coronation ceremony on SmackDown on February 18, alleging that he assaulted SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long several weeks before. Long interrupted Ziggler's marriage and accused Guerrero of orchestrating the assault, causing Guerrero to name Ziggler as the perpetrator and Long to rehire Edge. Long ruled Edge against Ziggler, who lost the championship back to Edge and was then dismissed by Long.
Ziggler was introduced as the new member of the Raw roster and defeated John Morrison in a singles match, but Ziggler was later fired from SmackDown; she was later forced to prove her place on the Raw roster. Ziggler was able to defend and keep his United States Championship in a tense four-way match against Swagger, Riley, and John Morrison at Night of Champions on September 18. This, as well as Ziggler's ongoing rivalry with Alex Riley, caused him to defend and keep his United States Championship. Despite Ziggler's stamina, it was later revealed that the suspected injury was fake. Guerrero officially started controlling Swagger later that night, and Swagger began participating in Ziggler's games to help him win. Ziggler and Swagger unsuccessfully protested Air Boom for the WWE Tag Team Championship at Hell in a Cell on October 2 and at Vengeance on October 23, where Ziggler also defended the United States Championship against Ryder.
