Devin Star Tailes (born July 2, 1989), better known as Dev (sometimes stylized as DEV or dEV), is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, model and radio host.

She was discovered by the record label, Indie-Pop, and The Cataracs via Myspace after her friend Shane Crislip, posted her singing.

Dev's song "Booty Bounce" was sampled in Far East Movement's hit single "Like a G6" which reached number one in the US, and sold over four million downloads in the country. Dev was signed to Universal Republic in October 2010, and released her debut single "Bass Down Low" in November 16, 2010 which reached the top 10 in the United Kingdom.

Her debut album The Night the Sun Came Up was released on March 27, 2012.

The second single, "In the Dark", peaked at number 11 in the US chart, making it her most successful solo single to date.

Dev in 2014 released two EPs, Bittersweet July and the second part as a follow-up to part one.

She's a radio host of the popular radio Beats 1 by Apple, founded in 2015. In mid-2016, Dev started promoting her album with an opening single called "#1" featuring Nef the Pharaoh which reached the top 15 on the Billboard Rhythmic Songs chart.

Dev's sophomore studio album I Only See You When I'm Dreamin' was made available for pre-order in July 2017, it includes the singles "All I Wanna Do" and "Come at Me" and is her first full-length project since 2011's The Night the Sun Came Up.

Early life

Dev was born to Lisa, a real estate agent, and Riki Tailes, a painting contractor. She has two younger sisters, Sierra Sol (born September 13, 1994) and Maezee Lua. Dev is of Costa Rican, Portuguese and Mexican descent. She grew up in the city of Manteca. At age 4, she began swimming and was part of the U.S. Olympic development program. She attended Brock Elliott Elementary and graduated from Sierra High School in 2007, where she was a member of band and choir. She attended San Joaquin Delta College, studying English and art history.

Personal life

In September 2011, Dev publicly announced that she was expecting a baby girl due December 24, 2011. Dev gave birth to her daughter Emilia Lovely on December 9, 2011. MTV aired a special about Dev's life as a mom and how she is juggling being a mother and a performer at the same time. The show also shed light on her daughter (Emilia Lovely Gorecki), who was born with a condition called gastroschisis, and how her daughter overcame it.

Dev produced a cover of Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" in 2009, and the production team, the Cataracs, contacted Dev. "I decided to post this song on MySpace," she said to Fashion Indie Magazine. It was basically a "diss track" and I didn't expect much out of it. It was just to make me feel better than music normally does, but Niles [of the Cataracs] came across to my page and became really into my voice, and it prompted me to sing and opened my eyes to new career opportunities." She dropped out of college in first year to focus on her singing career and was then signed by Indie-Pop, a Los Angeles-based record label and management company that later discovered the Cataracs. Dev and the Cataracs' song "2Nite" debuts on the radio, music video channel MTVU, and the Billboard Hot Dance Airplay chart, six months later. In 2009, Dev moved to Los Angeles to play with the Cataracs and work closely with Indie-Pop.

With Far East Movement, the Cataracs produced "Like a G6" in 2010 and decided to include a line from Dev's "Booty Bounce" as the chorus. Both songs were recorded in the same summer, around the time when Dev and the Cataracs were "roughing it out in the studio together," making a couple of "simplistic random tracks." "Like a G6," which features Far East Movement and Dev, was released in April 2010 and debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, ranked number one. In the United States, the song has now sold over four million downloads. In August 2010, a video for "Booty Bounce" directed by Ethan Lader was released and posted on YouTube, where it has attracted more than 20 million views. In October 2010, Dev was signed to Universal Republic and her first official single, "Bass Down Low," was broadcast to rhythmic radio stations in November. On December 6, 2010, it was released digitally in select countries and one day later in the United States. The song debuted at number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and at number two on the Heatseekers Songs chart, with the song at number two. The song reached its fifth week on the Canadian Hot 100 charts, peaking at number 35 in Canada. Despite this, "Bass Down Low" enjoyed a huge success in the United Kingdom, where it debuted at number ten on the UK Singles Chart, where it debuted at number ten.

Dev is featured on a remix of Girls' Generation's "Bad Girl" by the Cataracs, and Dev was also included on Timbaland's promotional single "Break Ya Back." On March 26, 2012, the American version of The Night the Sun Came Up was announced in the United States, which features new tracks in comparison to previous releases of the album. Dev has collaborated with singer Enrique Iglesias on "Naked," a Cataracs track that was released as the third single on the repackaged album. It came to its first appearance in Mexico and second in the US dance chart.

Dev announced that she was currently working on her second album; "I'm actually playing a lot more live instruments on this album," she said. During the 2012 Summer Olympics, her track "Bass Down Low" was featured during match intervals of Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, and Basketball, among other things. Universal Republic Records announced in 2013 that they were defunct, and all artists from the label were transferred to Republic Records. Sage the Gemini produced by Hit-Boy's in November 1, she performed "Kiss It" on her official YouTube channel in November 1. Although "Kiss It" will be published on December 17, 2013. Casey Veggies were included in the redesign version, in place of Sage the Gemini.

Dev worked with singer Mia Martina on her single Danse in November 2013, which gained traction in Latin and dance charts throughout spring 2014.

Dev left the Universal Republic and began to release music on her own in mid-2014, after the debut of her previous single "Kiss It." With NanosauR, Dev released an EP called Not All Love Songs Have To Be So Sad. On July 31, 2014, the EP was released on iTunes. Dev has posted a snippet of a new song on her Instagram account named "Kids" on August 7, 2014, announcing that Bittersweet July will be available for pre-order on August 11. Rica Lyfe Records, her own brand, released it on September 23. "Honey Dip" was announced as the EP's first single on November 5, 2014, by the Oakland-based rapper Kreayshawn. Dev announced the release of Bittersweet July, Pt., on December 6, 2014. 2 is a sequel to Part 1 and is available for pre-order along with the download of "The Night is Young." On December 15, the EP was released on iTunes. The two EPs will eventually be mixed in a single album, but not as a genuine album. As the lead single, the third track from the second part, "Parade," was released.

Dev worked with female electroduo Nervo on their single "Hey Ricky," which was supposed to be released with an attached video in April 2015. Kreayshawn, who produced the video, appeared in the single. On March 23, 2015, a snippet of the video leaked. The video, which was released on Vevo on June 2, 2015, went viral, reportedly leading the real-time US chart. Dev was also featured on the club's "Electric Walk" by electro-house producer Nytrix in December 2015. The song debuted at number eight on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart.

On January 25, 2016, Idolator unveiled a snippet of a song titled "Lowkey" and announced that on January 27, Ebro Darden would premiere Dev's standalone single on Beats1. Dev spent the majority of her time with NanosauR, Dave Tozer, and Rey Reel, her companion-producer. On March 8, 2016, "Lowkey" was released. The critic praised the album, although Selena Gomez's "Good for You" was compared to Selena Gomez's "Good for You."

Sander Kleinenberg's lead vocalist on "We Rock It" in February 2016. Dev signed with Barry Weiss's record company RECORDS in August 2016 and began promoting her album, "#1" featuring Nef the Pharaoh, which debuted on the Billboard Rhythmic Songs chart, which reached the top 15 spots.

With the release of two singles All I Want A Do & Come At Me, and the album's pre-order, Dev kicked off the campaign for her second album I Only See You When I'm Dreaming' in July 2017. On the record, Dev has worked with RAYE, MNDR, Sarah Hudson, and Marko Penn.

Dev began releasing singles with "Rock On It," "Down For Me," "Girls Don't Lie," and "Clean Break" beginning in 2018. She co-produced the song "Make Out" by Da Candy and Ferry, which was released in September 2018. Starting with "Mango" on July 17, "Follow My Lead" on August and "Bom Dia" on September 1, Dev began releasing a single every three weeks beginning in July 2020.

Dev appeared on Lollapalooza and Hard in July 2022, claiming that she was working on new music.
