Brandon Christopher McCartney (born August 17, 1989), more commonly known as Lil B and as his alter ego The BasedGod, is an American rapper, motivational speaker, and activist.

Lil B has performed both solo and with the Bay Area group The Pack.

His solo projects span several genres, including hip hop, new age, indie rock, and choral music.

He refers to his work as "based," a term that denotes a life of hope and compassion; and, he is known for his extensive use of social media to create a online cult following.

He has released a number of albums and mixtapes, most recently Loyalty Casket (2019).

Early life

McCartney grew up in Berkeley, California, and attended Albany High School in Albany. Lil B. He began rapping at age 15 with the San Francisco Bay Area based hip hop group The Pack. The group's song "Vans," which was released on two locally-released mixtapes during the Bay Area's hyphyrhy, became a surprise hit. Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album as the fifth best of 2006. The success of "Vans" prompted the group to announce the Skateboards 2 Scrapers EP, which featured a "Vans" remix with Bay Area rappers Too $hort and Mistah F.A.B. Based Boys, Lil B and The Pack's first album, was released in 2007.

Personal life

On January 16, 2015, Lil B's apartment building in Contra Costa County, California, caught fire early in the morning after an electrical fire spread through the building. Lil B and six others were saved by 15-year-old Mateo Ysmael, who rushed through the building to wake everybody up.

Bernie Sanders, a Vermont senator, was endorsed by him in the 2016 US presidential election, citing his civil rights record.

Lil B's first digital album, I'm Thraxx, was released on September 24, 2009, via independent label Permanent Marks. Lil B's second digital album, 6 Kiss, was unveiled on December 22, 2009, at a critical reception. Lil B's debut mixtape Dior Paint was released on March 25, 2010. Lil B officially signed to fellow artist Soulja Boy's label SODMG Entertainment on April 3, 2010. Lil B's Base World Pt. mixtape was released on May 7, 2010. 1. Lil B's Pretty Boy Millionaires collaboration mixtape with Soulja Boy was released on July 5, 2010. Lil B had more than 1,500 songs as of July 2010, including hits "Like A Martian," "Wonton Soup," "Pretty Bitch," and "I'm God," all of which were released for free. Lil B's debut studio album, Rain in England, was released by Weird Forest Records on September 21, 2010. Lil B's report called it "a beatless, Beat poetry-style set on which Lil B., ponders passion, beauty, and all the bad stuff in the world over na's latest-age synth washes."

Lil B reportedly signed an album contract with Amalgam Digital on December 29, 2010. Lil B. Smith's EP Paint line was unveiled on July 10, 2011, via his company BasedWorld Records.

Lil B's fourth digital album, Angels Exodus, was released on January 18, 2011 by Amalgam Digital. Lil B announced on April 14, 2011 that his next album, I'm Gay, would be released, which caused a bit of controversy. Lil B's fifth digital album, I'm Happy), was released on June 29, 2011 by Amalgam Digital; the album debuted on Billboard's R&B/Hip Albums chart at number 56 and the Heatseekers Albums chart at number 20 for the week of July 16, 2011.

Lil B's first instrumental album, Choices and Flowers, was released on May 17, 2012. Lil B's "California Boy" rock single was released on September 16, 2012. Lil B's second instrumental album, Tears 4 God, was released on December 30, 2012, under the alias "The Basedgod."

Lil B's mixtape 05 Fuck Em, which featured 101 songs, was released on December 24, 2013. Lil B released a mixtape named "F*ck KD" on June 1, 2014, which would be known for containing a track named "F*ck KD" that called out NBA player Kevin Durant. Lil Bitch's Ultimate Bitch mixtape on October 14, 2014, with the song "No Black Person Is Ugly" as the title. Lil B and Chance the Rapper announced on July 19, 2015, they had produced a new collaborative mixtape.

Lil B was included in Terror Jr.'s remix of their song "Come First" that was released in 2017.

Lil B. 'Black Ken's first official mixtape' was announced on August 17, 2017. For the week of September 2, 2017, the mixtape reached number 24 on the Top Heatseekers chart and number 44 on the Independent Albums chart.
