Kid Cudi Career

Musical career

Cudi first began rapping in 2003, right at the end of his time in high school, and was inspired by alternative hip hop bands like the Pharcyde and A Tribe Called Quest. He later moved to New York City to pursue a music career. After leaving Cleveland in 2005 with $500 and a demo tape, he and his uncle, a fantastic jazz drummer Kalil Madi, joined the South Bronx. He worked in a few Manhattan clothing stores before transferring to Dot da Genius in Brooklyn, a friend and collaborator.

In 2006, Cudi will meet his future mentor, rapper and producer Kanye West in a Virgin Megastore. "I was listening on CDs, saw the gleam of a Jesus piece in the right eye of my eye, looked up, and Kanye West was Kanye West," he described in a 2009 SPIN interview. He introduced himself and gifted West some of his songs. "I remember Kanye coming in one time and I was assisting him with a few things," Cudi said while working at the BAPE store in New York. I didn't take a sensor off one of his jackets, so I had to run out of the store to catch him before he left. "I'm chasing after him in SoHo," says the narrator.

Since having first posted the song on his MySpace homepage, Kid Cudi's song "Day 'n' Nite" debuted on many music blogs in 2007. This early work would continue to attract West's notice through his then-manager Plain Pat, who would later lead West to sign Cudi to his GOOD Music imprint later this year. Kid Cudi's first mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi (executive produced by Plain Pat and Emile Haynie), was released in July 2008 as a free download by New York street-wear brand 10.Deep.

Kanye West first asked Cudi to use hooks for American rapper and mogul Jay-Z, and while in the studio Cudi and West, they went from working on The Blueprint 3 (2009) to West's R&B-esque 808s & Heartbreak (2008). Pat and Emile are still my guys, and I'm sure I'll continue to work with them in the future. When we start working on Man on the Moon III, I'll be calling them up to see if they want to be a part of it. Emile is obviously down, according to me. We can make the five-act split from the same blueprint and do the five-act split. I'm still going to be where I am at, sonically. I was able to live up to the challenge and do Man on the Moon III. I haven't been dicing around. After Speedin' Bullet, I was considering doing it. The Speedin' Bullet response surprised me, but the Bullet's reaction threw me up.
