Early life
William Ray Norwood Jr. was born in McComb, Mississippi, to Willie Norwood and Sonja Bates-Norwood. Brandy, his older sister, is a multi-platinum recording artist. He went from McComb, Mississippi, to Los Angeles, California, and in 1989, he began to appear in television commercials for various companies. Norwood began auditioning for and appearing in television commercials in 1989; he played the foster son in The Sinbad Show from 1993 to 1994. Norwood's life during this period would influence his acting career. Career
In 1995, he signed to Elektra Records, and the same year, he released his debut album Everything You Want. The album, which was released in March 1997, became the lead single "Let It Go" on the Set It Off soundtrack. In New Zealand, "Let It Go" debuted at number 25 in the United States and number 11 on the top of the charts and ranked at number 25. According to the U.S. R&B chart, the second single peaked at number 54 on the US R&B chart. He was banned from the brand in 1997. He appeared on the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack in 1998 with the song "That's Why I Lie." He made the music for many commercials and a few of the demos for his second album for toy firm Mattel.
With Brandy, Ray J performed "Another Day in Paradise," a Top Ten hit in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Norway, Norway, Ireland, and France, where the Netherlands and France were the number 11 in Australia and France. "One Wish" the album's lead single, was a top 20 hit in the United States, Ireland, Ireland, and New Zealand. Raydiation eventually sold over 400,000 copies in the United States.
