He studied trumpet at Chetham's School of Music and was a member of the National Youth Orchestra at age 13.
Harding gathered a group of musicians to perform Pierrot Lunaire of Arnold Schoenberg at the age of 17, and sent Simon Rattle in Birmingham a video of the performance.
After listening to this tape, Rattle recruited Harding as an assistant to him at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for a year, from 1993 to 1994.
Harding attended the University of Cambridge, but Claudio Abbado named him his assistant with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in his first year at university.
Personal life
Adele and George, from his earlier marriage to Béatrice Muthelet, aviolist and co-principal violist of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, have two children. The marriage ended in divorce. Harding is a particular fan of Manchester United's football team Manchester United. Harding, a licensed airline pilot, has stated his intention to withdraw from flying to be a commercial pilot with Air France in 2020, but plans have been postponed in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 2021 New Year Honours for services to music, Harding was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
