Jacob Collier Career

Career

Collier began posting homemade, multi-instrumental content on YouTube in 2011, including a vocal arrangement of "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in 1971, and a multi-instrumental version of Stevie Wonder's "Don't Worry Bout a Thing" from the 1970 film "Don't You Worry" ("Don't You Worry a Thing." Collier's uploads included split-screen, multitrack recordings of him singing each of the arrangement's harmonies. These videos gained traction, with some, such as the aforementioned "Don't Worry 'bout a Thing" cover, receiving millions of views. Quincy Jones, a Collier-born artist who traveled to Montreux Jazz Festival, where they met with Herbie Hancock, was taken note of his appearance.

Around this time, Ben Bloomberg, a PhD student at the MIT Media Lab, contacted Collier about the design and engineering of musical hardware and apps for live performances. He and Collier created a "multimedia live experience" over the next month.

Collier's live performance on tour both Europe and the United States opened in 2015. A circle of musical instruments, as well as six simultaneous looping stations capable of simultaneous playback, were backed by synced real-time 3D video loops and projected onto a screen behind the instruments by Louis Mustill and William Young of Artists and Engineers. Collier's custom-built vocal "Harmonizer" unit, which allowed Collier to perform multi-voice harmonies in real time, was central to the show. The performance appeared at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. Collier opened for Hancock and Chick Corea at the 2015 Montreux Jazz Festival just a few weeks later.

Beats by Dr. Dre reached out to Collier in July 2015 to provide the music for 'The Game Starts Here' England's Rugby World Cup campaign. Collier produced a cappella version of "Jerusalem" for the commercial, which aired on national television prior to each England match.

Collier began recording In My Room in late 2015 after appearing with WDR Big Band in a concert in Cologne, Germany. He arranged, recorded, and produced the album himself, playing every instrument. He wrote eight of the eleven tunes. He recorded and mixed the album over three months in his family's living room. Bernie Grundman, the master of the project, was released on July 1st, 2016 by the independent record company Membran Entertainment Group. Following the launch of the website, Collier embarked on a one-man world tour, including the 2016 Montreux Jazz Festival.

Collier introduced the "#IHarmU" campaign in Pattiny, where 100 patrons sent him 15-second video clips of melodies that he coordinated with multiple vocal parts with his multi-screen layout and posted to social media in anticipation of the launch. More than 130 melodies and donations have been received by Collier, as well as British jazz artist Jamie Cullum, Ben Folds, Herbie Hancock, and Kevin Olusola, who were able to produce "White Christmas" for them on A Pentatonix Christmas, which received a Contemporary A Cappella Society award.

Collier was on Snarky Puppy's album, Family Dinner – Volume 2 in February 2016. Collier appeared in a Quincy Jones tribute concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London on August 22nd, in which he performed his own orchestral arrangement of his original song "In The Real Early Morning" with the Metropole Orkest, conducted by Jules Buckley, among other things.

Collier performed in December 2016 with 150 students at MIT to create "Imagination Off the Charts," a live concert at Kresge Auditorium that runs alongside orchestral arrangements of his repertoire. This residency was the subject of a documentary film called Imagination Off the Charts, which received a regional Emmy in June 2018.

Collier's best Arrangement, Instrumental, and Vocals for a cover of "Flintstones" won two Grammy Awards in February 2017. One month later, he made his TV debut on The Tavis Smiley Show, a cappella group Take 6. Collier recomposed Samsung's "Over The Horizon" as a new Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ this year, and was co-producer on two songs from Becca Stevens' album, Regina. Collier was instrumental in the development of DreamWorks' film The Boss Baby, with composer Hans Zimmer. Collier performed with Zimmer and Pharrell Williams at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival the following month. Collier appeared on the daily week's talk show Harry and as a speaker at the annual TED conference in Vancouver, Canada. The album Jazz Loves Disney 2, on which Collier performs a cover of "Under the Sea," was released on November 10th, 2017.

Collier performed internationally for two and a half years (between 1 July 2015 and December 2017, including the Metropole Orkest), while hosting masterclasses and concerts with orchestras and big bands around the world. At the North Sea Jazz Festival, he and Cory Henry appeared together with the Metropole Orkest and Jules Buckley on July 9th. Collier collaborated with American pop/R&B singer Tori Kelly in December 2017 to record a cappella YouTube video cover of the Christmas song "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas."

Collier revealed in December 2017 that the One-Man-Show's last appearance would be in Rome on December 18, 2017. He talked about the possibility of a second album, which will be released in 2018.

Collier was one of the surprise guests at Quincy Jones' 85th birthday party at the Montreux Jazz Club in July 2018.
