Tony Banks Career

Career

The intricate layouts and keyboard solos of "The Cinema Show" and "Watcher of the Skies" and "Supper's Ready" contributed to Genesis's success. Banks contributed (along with Anthony Phillips, Steve Hackett, and Rutherford) to Genesis's 12-string acoustic passages in songs including "The Musical Box," "Entangled," "The Cinema Show," and the beginning of "Supper's Ready" in addition to keyboards. On "Shepherd," an unreleased track that finally appeared on the Genesis Archive 1967-75 boxed set, Banks also performed as a back-up vocalist and sang co-lead vocals. "Mad Man Moon," "One for the Vine," and the anthemic ballad "Afterglow," which was a common precursor to the Bank-driven medleys that appeared at live shows for years, is not among the Notable Banks-penned Genesis songs (post Peter Gabriel).

Banks refused to participate in Steve Hackett's solo album Genesis Revisited in 1997 because he was concerned with past performance, and public knowledge would have caused further confusion, and a public appearance would have brought out Calling All Stations to a halt.

Since the Genesis break in 1998, Banks' career stalled, and he considered retirement from music. He started composing, titling an early piece "Black Down" that culminated in his decision to pursue orchestra composition at this time.

Following Gabriel's departure from Genesis, banks first considered making a solo album in 1975. He had a number of songs in progress at the time that were not on A Trick of the Tail (1976), their first album released without Gabriel, including "Mad Man Moon" and "Ripples" and sections of "Entangled."

Banks and Rutherford travelled to Polar Studios in Stockholm in 1979, shortly after Genesis had experienced a halt in activity, recording their first studio albums. A Curious Feeling, Banks' album, was first released in October of this year. It was intended to be based and named after Daniel Keyes' short story Flowers for Algernon, but the author had written a complete set of lyrics for the tale, but he was forced to cancel it after being told of a forthcoming musical version of the book. As well as keyboards, Banks plays the guitar and bass as he wishes the album to be "as personal as possible." He named Kim Beacon of String Driven Thing as his vocalist.

Banks released his second studio album, The Fugitive, in June 1983. It's his first album to feature him as the lead vocalist on all of the songs, which he considered after recording guide vocals for Collins and "Keep It Dark" on the Genesis album Abacab (1981). Fish, Nik Kershaw, Toyah Willcox, Jack Hues, and Jim Diamond have all appeared on his solo albums; some of them have included Fish, Nik Kershaw, Toyah Willcox, Jack Hues, and Jim Diamond.

Banks released a pop and rock-oriented album under the name Bankstatement in 1988, which included guitarist and co-producer Steve Hillage, as well as singers Alistair Gordon and Jayney Klimek and others. Having seen Rutherford's own group, Mike + the Mechanics, prosper, bankers were encouraged to continue the campaign. In 1989, the eponymously named album was released. On the album "Big Man," the banks also performed lead vocals.

Banks released his fourth studio album, Still, which featured Fish and Nik Kershaw in April 1991. Despite his previous use of one or two vocalists on an album, he preferred More for Still because he saw no point in restricting himself and choosing different artists for songs that suited better. Banks took the lead vocal on one track on the previous album (Hero For an Hour)

In 1994, the bank founded his second group project outside of Genesis. He had intended to name the band Incognito but found out there was another group with the same name and selected Strictly Inc. It featured Wang Chung vocalist Jack Hues, and their eponymously named album saw a UK release in September 1995.

Banks expressed an interest in recording another rock solo album in 2004, but found that the demand was getting more difficult in terms of securing a deal, despite the fact that it was solely being an independent or online release appealed to him. "I'm not trying to prove anything," he said. I haven't had to convince anyone. I don't have to worry about reports or something like that. You're just doing it for people who are familiar with what you're doing.

After David Bowie was originally booked but then refused to attend sessions, Banks and Rutherford were requested by musician and producer Rupert Hine to write music for the horror film The Shout (1978). Hine recommended Genesis and arranged recording in a church without Collins, but Collins was out of place at short notice. On Banks' solo album A Curious Feeling, the key theme that they created was later revealed on "From the Undertow."

The Wicked Lady (1983), bank Michael Winner's first major film score, was for the 1983 loose remake The Wicked Lady (1983). On Atlantic Records, the album was released in April 1983.

Around 1983, Banks was asked by director Peter Hyams to film "The Year We Make Contact (1984), the sequel to the famous science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and he loved his work for The Shout. However, Hyams' "masses" of music Banks had been poorly received by the bank, leading to his departure from the project, leaving Banks dissatisfied. Banks accepted the opportunity of judging another science fiction film, Lorca and the Outlaws (1984), which came with no compensation. Since banks were unable to use a commercial studio, he composed the songs using his own 16-track machine. When The Terminator's script was delivered, the bank was still a candidate to write the songs.

Quicksilver (1986) was his next soundtrack. The directors were more receptive to him, and the transaction went smoothly, but they felt the directors were missing more straightforward songs on the soundtrack in order to have a hit single that could be released. "Shortcut to Somewhere," a Marillion singer Fish's project that went from banks' solo career to top the charts in the United Kingdom when it reached number 75, was one of the tracks recorded.

On Banks' compilation album Soundtracks (1986), selections of music composed for Lorca and the Outlaws and Quicksilver were later published.

After hearing it in the film Death in Venice (1971), banks became interested in Gustav Mahler's music. Dmitri Shostakovich and Erik Satie are also listed as composers whose music he loves. Symphony No. 1 is identified by the composer. In A minor and Symphony No. 4, no. 4 has appeared. Jean Sibelius' 7 in C major and Symphony No. No. 2; Ralph Vaughan Williams' 5th in D major are among his favorite pieces. Vaughan Williams and film director John Barry are two of his orchestral compositions' most influential influences on his own orchestral compositions, according to critics. The bank has admitted that his orchestral works are based on those of Vaughan Williams, Sibelius, and Barry.

Banks released Seven: A Suite for Orchestra, his fourth studio album and the first of entirely classical music on Naxos Records in March 2004. He had the vision for the album six years before starting to work on it, and was encouraged after discovering the orchestral arrangements of his compositions for The Wicked Lady. For three tracks with conductor Mike Dixon, there are seven compositions performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra with Banks on the piano.

Banks' second classical album, Six Pieces for Orchestra, was released on March 26, 2012 (also on Naxos), featuring the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Paul Englishby. "Siren" features Martin Robertson on alto saxophone, "Still Waters," "Blade" stars Charlie Siem on violin, "Wild Pilgrimage", "The Oracle" and "City of Gold" are among the tracks on sale.

Five is the bank's third classical music collection that was released in February 2018. "I was approached to write a piece for the Cheltenham Music Festival the following year," the singer replied in the album's booklet, "I was thrilled to have one of my orchestral pieces performed live." Since then, I have written more music, creating this suite." It includes five pieces from The Czech National Symphony Orchestra and Choir, conducted by Nick Ingman, as well as Banks on piano and celeste.

Other recent ventures include writing music for operatic tenor John Potter and a Shakespeare sonnet.

In a deal with record company Concord, Phil Collins and his Genesis bandmates have sold the rights to their music for over $300 million. The package contains songs from Phil's solo career as well as hits from the band with Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, in the hopes of'bringing their music to younger generations.' The band, who rose to fame in the 1970s and have sold more than 100 million albums, saddened their supporters earlier this year when they played their final show.
