Alex Lacamoire Life

Alex Lacamoire (born May 24, 1975) is an American musician, arranger, conductor, musical director, music copyist, and orchestrator who has worked on many shows both on and off Broadway.

He is the recipient of multiple Tony and Grammy Awards for his work on shows such as In the Heights (2008), Hamilton (2016), and Dear Evan Hansen (2017).

Lacamoire was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor in 2018.

In May 2019, Lacamoire received a honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music.

Early life and education

Lacamoire was born in Los Angeles, California and began to play piano at age four. He and his family moved to Miami, Florida when he was nine. He entered Southwood Middle School, a school known for its fine arts program, and went on to New World School of the Arts. He then attended Berklee College of Music, graduating in 1995 with the highest GPA in the class (3.97). At Berklee he studied jazz, arranging, and film scoring.

Lacamoire has hearing loss and uses hearing aids.

Career

Lacamoire's early theatrical appearances as music conductor, arranger, and/or orchestrator include Bat Boy: The Musical (for which he also served as the musical conductor of the 2001 Original Cast Recording); and Legally Blonde. He also handled the cast recording of Godspell's 2000 touring cast members. In 2005, Lacamoire was also the music director and keyboarder for Wicked's musical High Fidelity, as well as assisting with the show's orchestrations.

For the Off-Broadway version of Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights, Lacamoire received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Orchestration. In The Heights went to the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway after a fruitful Off-Broadway run. For their combined efforts on In The Heights, Lacamoire and Bill Sherman received the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical Theater Album and the 2009 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

Bring It On The Musical's Coordination, Tom Kitt and Lacamoire were the Coordinations of Bring It On the Musical, another collaboration with Lin-Manuel Miranda — for which Lacamoire also served as a music director and arranger. In addition, Lacamoire conceived the dance arrangements for Annie's Broadway revival in 2012.

Lacamoire, orchestrator, and conductor for the Broadway revival of Hamilton at The Richard Rodgers Theatre, as well as the Co-Arranger (along with Lin-Manuel Miranda) of the show's score. In late 2016, Lacamoire transitioned to the role of music conductor, leaving him in charge of directing each performance and instead supervising the music at all of the various productions. In 2016, Lacamoire received his second Tony Award for Best Orchestrations for Hamilton's Broadway performance.

Original Broadway Cast Recording was released digitally on September 25, 2015, and Atlantic Records as a two-disc set on October 25, 2015. In 2016, it received the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, earning Lacamoire his second Grammy Award as a record producer.

Lacamoire has been involved in the well-received Ham4Ham performances that have taken place outside the Richard Rodgers Theatre on days when both matinee and evening performances of Hamilton are present.

Lacamoire, the Music Supervisor of Dear Evan Hansen, a musical for which he received his third Tony award and his third Grammy nomination. Carmen Jones, later known as Carmen La Cubana, was the music conductor, orchestrator, and co-arranger of the Cuban version of Georges Bizet's Carmen Jones. The adaptation features the classic opera score in Cuban musical terms, with all-new Cuban musical arrangements incorporated. Lacamoire's involvement in the Cuban-American performance meant channeling music that is "in my blood."

Lacamoire reunited with Lin-Manuel Miranda on his song "Almost Like Praying" in late 2017 to benefit Hurricane Maria relief and recovery in Puerto Rico.

In late 2017, Lacamoire, the Executive Music Producer on the film The Greatest Showman, was the Executive Music Producer on the film.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Found/Tonight" was released in March 2018 by Lacamoire in March 2018. Ben Platt appeared on the album as a result of his appearance. "First Burn" was Lacamoire's planned Hamildrop in April 2018. The 5 Elizas, who took over the role after Phillipa Soo left the show in July 2016, were included in the performance.

Alex Lacamoire appeared on The Hamilcast: A Hamilton Podcast in July 2018 for a series of three episodes. The episodes featured a musical breakdown of "The Schuyler Sisters" as well as an in-depth look at Hamilton's music.

According to a Ticketmaster listing, the Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd is scheduled to land at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City in 2023. According to the listing, the musical will premiere on Broadway for the first time since 1980 - with Jonathan Tunick's classic 26-player orchestration on an epic scale.' Hamilton director Thomas Kail, 44, leads a cast including Josh Groban, 41, playing the titular role, and Annaleigh Ashford, 37, playing Mrs. Lovett.
