Acting career

McKellar began attending weekend acting classes for children at the Lee Strasberg Institute in Los Angeles at age seven. She appeared in The Wonder Years, an American television comedy-drama that aired on ABC from 1988 to 1993, where she spent a long time in her teens. On the show, she played Gwendolyn "Winnie" Cooper, Kevin Arnold's main love interest (played by Fred Savage). In an episode of The Wonder Years, she had her first kiss with Fred Savage. "My first kiss was a traumatic experience," she later said. We never kissed off screen, and then our thoughts developed into brother/sister and stayed the same."

McKellar has said that moving from being a child actor to an adult actress was "difficult." McKellar has appeared in numerous television series (including one with former co-star Fred Savage on Working), and has written and directed two short films since leaving The Wonder Years. Kristin Guthrie appeared in two Lifetime TV films in the Moment of Truth series in 1994, as Annie Mills Carman and Cradle of Conspiracy in 1994. Elsie Snuffin, the half-sister and assistant of Deputy White House Communications Director Will Bailey, appeared on television for a brief period of time.

McKellar was included in Debbie Gibson's eighth single, "No More Rhyme," which was released in 1989. In the beginning of the video, she appears as the cello.

In the July 2005 issue of Stuff magazine, McKellar appeared in lingerie after readers selected her as the 1990s actress they would most like to see in lingerie. McKellar explained that she consented to the shooting in part to gain "grittier roles."

McKellar appeared in a Lifetime film and web-based series Inspector Mom about a mother who solves mysteries in 2006.

McKellar, a WJF-FM radio station in Washington, D.C., announced on August 1, 2007 that the creators of How I Met Your Mother, "The Pineapple Incident," and again in early 2007 in "Third Wheel." In the episode "The Psychic Vortex," she appeared on the show The Big Bang Theory.

She appeared in Heatstroke, a Sci-Fi Channel original film about searching for alien life on Earth, in 2008, and she was one of the early pioneers of VH1's I Love the New Millennium. Ellen Plainview appeared in Lifetime's reimagining of the 1956 Alfred Hitchcock film The Wrong Man.

McKellar has also appeared in films as Jubilee (2004) and Invisible Woman in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 (2008). In the television series Young Justice, she played Miss Martian.

Dustin Milligan appeared in the Lifetime film Love at the Christmas Table in 2012.

She appeared in the Syfy film Tasmanian Devils with Apolo Ohno in January 2013.

Avril Lavigne, a Canadian singer, debuted the music video for her single "Rock N Roll" from her self-titled fifth album, which features McKellar as "Winnie Cooper."

She was announced on March 4, 2014, she would be competing on season 18 of Dancing with the Stars. Valentin Chmerkovskiy and Sherry have partnered together. On Week 8, McKellar and Chmerkovskiy were eliminated, finishing in 6th place.

In "The Blunder Years," she appeared in the Impractical Jokers season four episode six, she appeared as a guest. "Speech Impediment" was her second guest appearance in season seven episode ten.

She appeared in Netflix's original series Project Mc2 as The Quail in 2015.

She has appeared in many Hallmark Channel films, including Crown for Christmas, My Christmas Dream, Campfire Kiss, Love and Sunshine, Christmas in Dollywood, and You, Me and the Christmas Trees as well as the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries series The Matchmaker Mysteries.
