Personal life
Gilbert dated Roseanne (and later The Big Bang Theory) co-star Johnny Galecki as a teen (their characters also dated). She discovered she was a lesbian during their relationship. Galecki remains a close friend.
Gilbert began a friendship with television producer Ali Adler in 2001. They have two children, Levi Hank born in October 2004 and Sawyer Jane, a daughter born to Gilbert in August 2007. Gilbert was very private about her sexuality for many years, choosing not to comment on her personal life. Career
Darlene Conner, the sarcastic middle child in Roseanne, landed the role after appearances in television films and a commercial for Kool-Aid at 13. Gilbert was a cast member of the show's nine-year run (1988–97), for which she wrote a fourth-season episode story titled "Don't Make Me Over" (the Guild Writers' script for the show). Roseanne's contribution was so significant that the show's producers juggled storylines and taping dates to allow her to attend Yale University while also remaining in the cast, shooting remote segments of Darlene at a soundstage in New York.
Gilbert has appeared on The Simpsons, 24, Will & Grace: Special Victims Unit and Private Practice. Jane Figler, a long-running hospital drama, appeared on the long-running hospital drama ER from 2004 to 2013, and her appearances spanned seasons 11-13.
Gilbert regained a regular slot on prime time television in the fall of 2005 on The WB network as part of the comedy Twins. After one season, when the WB and UPN networks combined as The CW and dropped a number of series, the show was cancelled. Fern Velch played her role on the short-lived CBS sitcom The Class.
Gilbert appeared in episodes of The Big Bang Theory from 2007 to 2010. Leslie Winkle, a scientist friend of Leonard Hofstadter played by Johnny Galecki, who had previously played Gilbert's love interest David Healy on Roseanne, appeared in episodes of the CBS TV show The Big Bang Theory. Gilbert was introduced to the show's main cast in the second episode of Galecki's second season, revealing a potential love interest of Galecki's character and a love interest to Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg). By January 2009, it was revealed that the authors had no idea how to write for her character full-time, and that her status had been reduced from regular to recurring. Since Amy Farrah Fowler and Bernadette Rostenkowski became popular characters, Winkle was largely dropped.
Gilbert co-host and executive producer of The Talk, a talk show that premiered on October 18, 2010. Gilbert was named the host and show producer of the show in a Daytime Emmy in 2016. On August 2, 2019, she would have been her final appearance as co-host.
Roseanne's eight-episode revival project was initiated, with Gilbert as the executive producer. It was announced on May 16, 2017, and the eight episodes, which ABC picked up by ABC, debuted on March 27, 2018. A second season was announced thanks to the revival's strong ratings and positive critical reception. However, ABC cancelled the revival after a single season on May 29, 2018, following Barr's inflammatory remarks about Valerie Jarrett (an advisor to former President Barack Obama) on Twitter. Gilbert distanced herself and Barr's tweets, saying that her remarks are "abhorrent and do not represent our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show."
ABC revealed on June 21, 2018, that the network had ordered ten episodes of a Roseanne spin-off. The Conners, a comedy starring all of the regular cast except Barr, premiered in October 2018, with Gilbert starring and serving as an executive producer.
