Carlos Javier Rivera Masso (born in San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican singer and actor.
Masso, a former Menudo staffer, joined the group at a time when Menudo's worldwide success was evident.
With his appearance on Por Amor and Una Aventura Menudo, which was the soundtrack of Menudo's second film, Rene Farrait became a fan favorite straight away.
Charlie released 14 albums with Menudo, two of whom were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album in 1984 and 1985.
Career
Masso began his life as a Menudo, the exact time when one of Menudo's "golden era" Farrait's members left the company. Masso's presence helped prolong the golden age for three years, and when he left the company in 1987, he was the last one of the group's golden years to leave. Masso was a member of Menudo during the company's most commercially profitable period in the United States, which included the group's highest-charting U.S. single "Hold Me" (#62 on the Billboard Hot 100). Xavier Serbia, Johnny Melendez, Ricky Melendez, Miguel Cancel, Ray Reyes, Robby Rosa, and Ricky Martin were among Masso's bandmates. After Robby Rosa resigned from the company to introduce new member Ruben Gomez for their last tour in the Philippines earlier this year, Ralphy Rodriguez was forced out of the group by his parents late that year.
Menudo appeared in Manila, Philippines twice for their concert at the Folk Arts Theater in 1985, with several celebrity appearances on Eat Bulaga, Vilma in person and GMA Supershow. Menudo's fame in the Philippines was enhanced by their fluency in several languages. This was expressed in Spanish, English, and Filipino songs. Charlie sang " Di Na Natuto," a Tagalog song to serenade a young Filipina in 1986. "I Still Believe" was Charlie's duet with Lea Salonga, a big hit in 1988-1989.
Masso performed in soap operas for many years after leaving the band. He married and had a family. He was recruited by bandmate Ray Reyes in 1998 while performing with a merengue orquesta, Grupo KAOS, and he spent time with Melendez, Farraga, Lozada, Reyes, and Cancel in touring many of the cities where they had visited millions of fans as Menudos with El Reencuentro.
He appeared in 12 Horas, a Puerto Rican film written and directed by Ral Marchand Sánchez in 2001.
Masso debuted El Reencuentro in 2015 and joined Fart, Cancel, and Reyes in a new Menudo-reunion band they've named "Menudomania Forever."
