Uhm Jung-hwa Life

Uhm Jung-hwa (Korean: ; born on August 17, 1969) is a South Korean musician, actor, and dancer. Uhm is regarded as one of Korea's most influential women, with rare success in both music and film. "Korean Madonna" has been her name since her time and career changes.

Uhm began her career as a chorus member for MBC in 1989. She appeared in On a Windy Day, We Must Go to Apjeong, a 1993 romance drama, and she also released her debut studio album, Sorrowful Secret, that same year. Despite that both of the albums received limited attention, "Pupil," the album's lead single, "Pupil," helped to establish a uniquely sensuous image for Uhm.

She voted to dance music on 1996's "Sad Expectation" and found her first success with "Rose of Betrayal" ( ) from her third studio album, After Love (1997). Invitation (1998) and 005.1999.06 (1999) were boosted by a string of hit singles: "Poison," "I Don't Know" ("Mata"), and "Festival"), which earned her fame as one of the late 1990s' most influential pop stars, and cemented her status as one of the leading pop icons of the late-1990s.

Starting in 2001, Uhm began focusing on her acting career. In the 2002 Baeksang Arts Awards, she received Best Actress, a category she received another nomination for in 2006 with Princess Aurora and then again in 2012 with Dancing Queen.

Her 2000s musical output saw declining commercial success but greater success with critics. Uhm began experimenting with electronics on Self Control (2004) and funk on Prestige (2006), the latter of which received Best Dance and Electronic Album at the 4th Korean Music Awards. With the single "D.I.C.O." in 2008, she saw a commercial revival. She unveiled her tenth studio album The Cloud Dream of the Nine in 2017 after a nearly decade absence from music.

Personal life

Uhm was diagnosed with thyroid cancer but recovered after surgery in May 2010. Uhm said she was worried leading up to the surgery but rather than being discouraged by the agony she was experiencing, she decided to dedicate herself to helping others by inspiring them. "I want to use my talent and influence in a meaningful way," she said.
