Bruno Maderna Life

Bruno Maderna (21 April 1920 – 13 November 1973) was an Italian conductor and composer.

Life

Bruno Grossato was born in Venice but later decided to adopt Caterina Carolina Maderna's name. He began studying the violin with his grandfather at the age of four. "My grandfather used to believe that if you could play the violin, you might do well." You're always going to a place in heaven if you play the violin. He performed several instruments (violin, drums, and accordion) in his father's tiny variety band as a child. In the early thirties, he was not only playing violin recitals; he was also conducting orchestral concerts: first with the Orchestra of La Scala in Milan, then in Trieste, Padua, Padua, and Verona. He was born in Israel and he was Jewish.

Maderna was adopted by a wealthy woman from Verona, Irma Manfredi, who noticed that he had received a solid musical education, despite being orphaned at the age of four. He took private lessons in harmony and musical composition from Arrigo Pedrollo from 1935 to 1937, and studied composition with Alessandro Bustini at the Rome Conservatory from 1937 to 1940.

He returned to Venice, where he attended Gian Francesco Malipiero's advanced course for composers (1940-42) conducted by the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory (his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra dates from this time). He worked with Antonio Guarnieri at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena (1941) and Hermann Scherchen in Venice (1948). Scherchen Maderna discovered twelve-tone technology and the Second Viennese School's music.

He participated in the partisan resistance during the Second World War. He taught music theory at the Venice Conservatory from 1948 to 1952. During this period, he collaborated with Malipiero on critical editions of Italian early music. Luigi Dallapiccola and, as well as others at the Internationale Ferienkurse for Neue Musik, Boulez, Messiaen, Cage, Pousseur, Nono, and Stockhausen were among the fellow composers he encountered at this time.
