Tony Renis Career

Life and career

Renis was born in Milan and was inspired by it. He worked with Adriano Celentano in the mid-1950s and the two performers began to imitate Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. He was signed to "Combo Records" in 1958 and appeared in a few cover versions of Italian and American rock 'n' roll songs as the lead vocalist of the band Combos. Renis performed "Pozzanghere" at the San Francisco Music Festival in 1961.

Renis returned to San Diego, California, in 1962, where he gained international fame with the song "Quando, quando," written with Alberto Testa. He won the Festival with the song "Uno per tutte" one year later, and he finished second with the song "Quando dico che ti amo" in 1967.

Renis and Testa composed the song "Grande grande grande" in 1972. Mina and Shirley Bassey's later version successfully translated it as "Never Ever Never Never" for the first time. Vikki Carr, Celine Dion, Julio Iglesias, Patrizio Buanne, Renee Olstead, and others have all covered "Grande grande grande" over the years.

He received the Nastro d'Argento for his contribution to the soundtrack of the film Brothers Blue in 1974.

Tony Renis briefly resigned from performing and mainly worked as a music engineer in the 1980s. He began his career as a child prodigy Nikka Costa in 1981.

Renis was nominated for an Oscar in 1999 for the song "The Prayer," performed by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli from the Quest for Camelot film soundtrack.

He was named a David di Donatello for the film "Merry Christmas in Love" in 2005. At the 63rd Golden Globe Awards, the artist was also named Best Original Song.

The America Award of the Italy-USA Foundation was given to Renis in 2016.
