Alfred Burt Life

Alfred Shaddick Burt (April 22, 1920 – February 7, 1954) was an American composer of fifteen Christmas carols from 1942 to 1954.

Only one of the carols was performed in public outside of his immediate family circle during his lifetime.

Early life

Burt was born in Marquette, Michigan. When his father, Bates G. Burt (1878–1948), became rector of All Saints Pontiac, an Episcopal church in Pontiac, his family relocated to Pontiac, Michigan. Alfred received his first musical instrument, a cornet, as a gift from his parents at the age of 10. Alfred spent the bulk of his life playing cornet and trumpet in bands and orchestras, with a particular interest in jazz.

Burt studied music at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, with a focus on Music Theory. In 1942, he graduated as a top music theory student with a Bachelor of Music degree.

The creation of a Christmas card, which Burt continued prior to heading to Pontiac in 1922, was a tradition that he continued before moving to Pontiac. On these cards were original Christmas carols, with both the words and music by Reverend Burt. Alfred, a college graduate, asked his father to write the songs for the family's Christmas card in 1942, "Christmas Cometh Caroling." Alfred will write the family's Christmas cards from then on.

Professional life

In 1949, Burt joined the Alvino Rey Orchestra. Anne, on the other hand, lived in Michigan, where the Burts' only child, Diane Bates Burt, was born on March 8, 1950. Anne, a pregnant woman, approached Wihla Hutson (1901–2002), the organist at Rev. The church of Bates Burt would write the lyrics for the annual Christmas card, which Alfred then would set to music. This carol, "Sleep, Baby Mine" (also "Carol of the Mother), was a lullaby for an unborn child. Alfred, Anne and six-week-old Diane were born in Los Angeles, California, in the spring of 1950.

Burt continued his work as an arranger and guitarist for bands including Hal Richards, Horace Heidt, and Alvino Rey.

The Christmas card list grew from 50 to 450 people over the next several years as the Burts' circle of friends expanded. However, the Alfred Burt Carols remained anonymous outside of Burts' growing mailing list.

"Come, Dear Children" - a 1952 carol. Burt wrote the songs during a rehearsal with the Blue Reys, Alvino Rey's vocal group. He begged them to sing it so he could be sure the harmonies worked; they loved it so much that they asked Burt if they could sing it at The King Sisters annual Christmas party. It was a hit among the party attendees, and it was a pleasure to introduce Burt's carols to Hollywood.

The Burt-Hutson relationship continued until Alfred Burt's death in 1954.
