Bacary Sagna Life

Bacary Sagna (born 14 February 1983) is a French former professional footballer who played as a right back and is best known for his time at Arsenal. He also competed for the French national football team.

Arsène Wenger, Arsenal's former manager, once described him as the best right-back in the Premier League. He appeared on several occasions as a center-back for Arsenal in lieu of a regular wing-back.

Sagna began his work at Auxerre before transferring to Arsenal for £7 million in 2007. He made a move to Manchester City in 2014, shortly after winning the FA Cup, his first trophy at the club. He was selected by France for two FIFA World Cup tournaments and one UEFA European Championship from 2007 to 2016.

Personal life

Bacary Sagna was born in Sens, France, to Senegalese immigrant parents. He is a Muslim. In 2010, he married Ludivine Kadri, a French-Algerian model with whom he already had a son named Elias (born in 2009). In 2013, Kadri gave birth to the couple's second son Kais.

Ibrahima Sonko, his cousin, played for Reading and in Turkey for Akhisar Belediyespor.

Sagna was an ambassador for Grassroot Soccer, an international non-profit that uses football to educate, inspire, and mobilize communities to prevent HIV transmission from spreading.

The majority of Sagna's coworkers refer to him as "Bac."

Bacary Sagna Career

Club career

Sagna began his football career at FC Sens. He was with the youth team from 1998 to 1998.

He joined the youth team in AJ Auxerre in 1998. He was eventually promoted to the first team and made 87 appearances for them in Ligue 1. In 2005, he was part of the Coupe de France squad. In each of his three seasons with the club's first team, he appeared in the UEFA Cup for the first time, totaling 17 appearances in the competition. He was also selected into the Ligue 1 team of the season for his outstanding results at the right back position. He served in the same Auxerre team as Abou Diaby, a potential Arsenal teammate, and Watford center-back Younès Kaboul. Sagna established himself as one of the best full backs of the French top tier and was thus nicknamed "Mr." The club's supporters are "reliable." He also received the Auxerre Player of the Year award for the 2006–07 season.

Sagna completed a transfer to Arsenal from Auxerre on July 12, 2007 for an undisclosed fee, which may have risen to €11 million. He was given the number 3 shirt, which had not been worn by former defender Ashley Cole.

Sagna made his Arsenal debut on July 19th as a starter in the team that beat Turkish club Gençlerbirli 3–0 in a friendly at Bad Waltersdorf Stadion in Austria.

Omar Sagna, Sagna's older brother, died on February 13, 2008, just one week before Arsenal was due to face Milan in the Champions League's second leg. He did play the game after being told not to by his father, but he did play the sport. Arsenal went on to win the second leg by 0–2 on aggregate, with the same scoreline on aggregate.

Arsenal won by 1–0 after a corner kick on March 23rd, but Chelsea took the lead against London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea later lost the game 2–1. He was named in the PFA Team of the Year at the end of the year.

Sagna did not sign a new one with Arsenal until the 2008–09 season. Arsenal has been a member of Arsenal for a second two years, extending his deal until 2014. "I love Arsenal, it's a great team," Sagna said, "The boss is also very good, and we'll be fighting for all the trophies next season." Arsenal rescued Arsenal in a 2–2 draw against Aston Villa when he jumped and kicked the ball away so that Arsenal would advance to halftime.

Sagna struggled to recover his form from the previous two seasons, as injuries also barred him from playing for the team in the same manner. He had many assists, but perhaps his most important role was the cross to striker Nicklas Bendtner, who gave Arsenal the 1–0 lead in the 94th minute against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite this, Sagna was linked to various clubs, including Internazionale's Internazionale, who was apparently keen on losing the defender away from London.

Sagna scored his first goal at the Emirates Stadium for Arsenal against Celtic, a game in which Arsenal advanced to win 3–2 and lift the Emirates Cup for the second year in a row. Arsenal defeated Chelsea 2–0 at Stamford Bridge on October 3, 2010, his 100th league start for the club. In a 2–1 away victory over Everton at Goodison Park on November 14, he scored his second career goal for Arsenal, along with a spectacular shot from the near post. Sagna won his first red card in his Arsenal career on Sunday, beating Serbian club Partizan in Arsenal's last Champions League group game of the season on December 8th.

In a match against Birmingham City on January 1, 2011 he was involved in an incident where Lee Bowyer stamped on Sagna after he had gone in for a tackle. Bowyer was banned from the FA for three games because of the stamp. Sagna earned his second red card of the season on Monday when he and Manchester City fullback Pablo Zabaleta taunted each other in the final moments of Arsenal's 0–0 draw with City at Emirates Stadium. Sagna scored his second goal of the season on his second goal in Arsenal's 3–1 victory over Leeds United in a third round replay on 19 January. This was Sagna's best goal-scoring debut, his previous best came in the 2007–08 season, where only once scored. Sagna was selected to the PFA Team of the Year in 2010-2011 for his role in the 2010-2011 season.

Sagna started and played the full 90 minutes against Newcastle United at St James' Park in a 0–0 draw on the first day of the 2011-12 Premier League season. He started left-back on Saturday and played the full 90 minutes in a 2–0 loss at the hands of a Liverpool side that gained its first victory over the Gunners away from home in 11 years on Saturday. Sagna did not attend Arsenal's game against Manchester United at Old Trafford on August 28th due to sickness.

Sagna suffered a leg break during a match against Tottenham Hotspur in North London, after Benoît Assou-Ekotto's challenge compelled him to land awkwardly. Sagna was dismissed from the bench against Aston Villa as an 89th-minute replacement on December 29, 2012, marking his return to form. He started with Spurs in the North London derby against Spurs on February 26, 2012, scoring a header from a Mikel Arteta cross and causing Arsenal to come back from being 2–0 down to win 5–2. In the final home game of the season against Norwich City, he suffered another leg break of the same leg, effectively throwing him out of UEFA Euro 2012 in June 2012.

Sagna scored in Arsenal's 1–0 victory over Queens Park Rangers in October 2012, marking his return to the first team. He got off and played the full 90 minutes against Manchester United at Old Trafford on November 3rd, a 2–1 league loss. Carl Jenkinson started for Arsenal and earned rave reviews, but Sagna continued to be Arsenal's first-choice right back when he returned. Sagna was forced to fill in as a central defender against Sunderland on February 9, 2013 due to a back injury to center-back Laurent Koscielny during warm-ups. He was instrumental in the 1–0 victory for Arsenal, a ten-man team. Sagna had a late tackle inside the penalty box against Robin van Persie in a 1–1 home draw against Manchester United on April 28, 2013, conceding a penalty to bring the score level up after a second-minute Arsenal goal.

Sagna was Arsenal's first choice right-back at the start of the season, despite opposition from Carl Jenkinson. He scored his first goal of the season, his fifth in Arsenal colours, against Stoke City on September 22, resulting in a 3–1 victory for the Gunners. Arsenal beat Hull City 3–2 at Wembley Stadium on May 17th, his first trophy at the club.

Sagna did not renew his deal with the Gunners, which was supposed to expire at the end of the season, on May 27. Despite Arsenal promising him a two-year contract extension, Sagna was expected to be "90 percent positive" of leaving the Emirates, despite refusing the contract extension. According to additional reports, Manchester City and a number of top clubs in Europe had expressed an interest in signing him. Sagna said he did not sign a new contract with Arsenal because "the discussions did not go in the direction he desired."

Sagna had agreed to a new Premier League contract with Manchester City after his Arsenal contract came to an end on June 30th. He was City's first signing of the summer and has signed a three-year contract, earning the number 3 shirt. In June 2017, he left the club at the end of his deal.

Sagna joined Benevento Calcio for six months and a year as a member on February 3, 2018. Sagna scored his sole goal for Benevento with a 90th-minute header in their 3-3 draw to Udinese on April 29.

Sagna joined Montreal Impact in Major League Soccer for the remainder of the 2018 season, with a choice for 2019. Sagna also signed a one-year deal to remain with the club for the 2019 season, despite the fact that the option was not taken up.

International career

Sagna has previously played for the French under-21 team, with whom he also competed in the 2006 European Under-21 Championships.

"I wanted to play for Senegal when I was 17 years old," Sagna said of the Senegalese national team, but they didn't reply. So I was a little dissatisfied. However, when I first started playing for Auxerre's first team, they contacted me and told me that I had a game with the French national team under 21s, so I had to make the decision."

Sagna earned his first international cap for France on August 22, 2007, defeating Slovakia 1–0, leaving Sagna as a substitute for François Clerc after one hour of play. He made his competitive debut for France in their 6–0 away victory over the Faroe Islands on October 13, 2007, playing all 90 minutes. It was his first appearance in Euro 2008 qualifying. He did not qualify for the French team in the Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland because he was still recovering from the injury sustained in Arsenal's Premier League match against Chelsea in March 2008.

Sagna returned to the French squad for their friendly match against Sweden in August 2008, playing all 90 minutes in a 3–2 away win after recovering from the injury. He went on to be a regular participant in the French team's qualifying campaign for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He was also involved in the team's humiliating French World Cup bid after losing 2–1 against South Africa.

Sagna was unable to participate in UEFA Euro 2012 due to a fractured leg.
