Dani Alves Life

Daniel Alves da Silva (born 6 May 1983) is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a right-back for São Paulo FC and captains the Brazil national team.

He is the most decorated player in the history of football with over 40 trophies, with also being the second most decorated defender of all time in European competitions with nine European medals, leaving him equal with Paolo Maldini on the all-time list. Before joining Barcelona in 2008, Alves spent a successful six-year spell with Sevilla, winning two UEFA Cups and the Copa del Rey with the Andalusian side.

He joined Barcelona for €32.5 million, becoming the third-most expensive defender of all-time.

He won the treble in his first season with the club and in the next season, won the Supercopa de España, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Additionally, he helped the club to clinch another two Supercopa de España, five La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League titles in the years that followed.

In 2016, Juventus signed Alves on a free transfer.

Alves won the 2016–17 Serie A title and 2016–17 Coppa Italia in his only season with the side, also reaching the Champions League Final.

In 2017, Alves joined French side Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, winning a domestic treble in his first season, followed by another league title the following season.

In 2019, he returned to his home country, joining São Paulo. A full international for Brazil since 2006, Alves was included in their squads for two FIFA World Cups and five Copa América tournaments, winning the 2007 and 2019 editions of the latter competition, as well as the 2009 and 2013 FIFA Confederations Cups.

Early life

Alves was born in Juazeiro, a city in the Brazilian state of Bahia, to father Domingos Alves da Silva, a farmer. He played football with the neighboring kids. Alves' father had a passion for football as well, and eventually managed to organize his own football team. Alves, at age 6, started as a winger, but because of the lack of goals he scored, his father re-positioned him as a right back, a position he still plays up to this day. Alves worked as a farmer and a trader in his youth.

Personal life

On 29 September 2011, Alves was appointed as a Special Olympics Ambassador for its Global Football program, charged with promoting respect and inclusion in football for people with intellectual disabilities, particularly in the run up to the 2014 World Cup.

Along with his ex-teammate turned rapper, José Manuel Pinto, Alves released a song called "Suave" on YouTube on 15 June 2018.

In September 2021, Alves indicated he was a supporter of Jair Bolsonaro after posting slogans in favor of the Brazilian president.

That same year, Alves was appointed as an Earthshot Prize council member, an environmental initiative led by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.

In addition to his native Portuguese, Alves also speaks English and Spanish.

Dani Alves Career

Club career

In a match against Paraná Clube in 2001, Alves made his professional debut for Bahia, winning a penalty for the other goal. Evaristo de Macedo, the head coach, was given a starting position in the team shortly after. He won the Campeonato Baiano 2001 and 2002 in Bahia, as well as two times in the Northeast Cup 2001 and 2002. He was based on a transfer from Spanish side Sevilla, first on loan, from 2002 to 2003, owing to his consistent good results.

Alves, who was on loan to Sevilla from Bahia, travelled to play in the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship, where he impressed as Brazil defeated the tournament. He was voted the third best player of the tournament by the time he was selected, and the Sevilla move was made permanent after this.

Sevilla agreed to sell Alves to Liverpool in June 2006, but Liverpool was unable to match Sevilla's asking price of around £8 million. He signed a new deal with Sevilla in December 2006, tethering him to the club until 2012. He had a fruitful 2006–07 season, with 47 appearances and five goals. In a competition that the club went on to win, he participated in every one of Sevilla's UEFA Cup matches.

Alves gained Spanish citizenship from his time in Spain, allowing him to avoid any non-EU quota restrictions and excluding him from requiring a work visa to play in any EU countries.

Alves told SporTV that he wanted to leave Sevilla for a European giant, later reiterating his desire to move Sevilla to Marca, and that he would never turn down such an opportunity. Alves revealed that his agent had been in England for some time handling Chelsea's contract, prompting Sevilla to at least consider the possibility.

Sevilla refused an unspecified Chelsea bid on August 16 and then rejected two more Chelsea bids six days later, deeming them to be "way below what was expected." Alves expressed disappointment with Sevilla club president José Mardo's decision to pull Chelsea's bids for his services after his move to Stamford Bridge fell, with Chelsea acquiring fellow Brazilian fullback Juliano Belletti for a much cheaper price. Alves opted to stay with Sevilla after a public war of words between Alves and Del Nido, as well as the death of teammate Antonio Puerta, the player and president were apparently reconciled.

Alves joined Barcelona on July 2, 2008, shedding tears and announcing that he would return to Sevilla to play for the club again. He came as a boy and left Sevilla as a man. The official price of the transfer stood at £23 million up-front, but more depend on a variety of success-related variables over the next three seasons of Alves' Barcelona career, making him one of the most expensive defenders in history and the third-most expensive player bought by Barça. He had a four-year deal with Barcelona, which included a buy-out provision of €90 million. In the 2008–09 UEFA Champions League third-round qualifiers, Alves made his European debuts for Barcelona against Wisa Kraków. On August 31, 2008, he made his La Liga debut in the Liga season-opener against Numancia. He missed the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final due to a yellow-card suspension, but Barcelona nonetheless defeated Manchester United 2–0 to complete the treble after also winning La Liga and the 2008–09 Copa del Rey.

The team retained the Liga crown and lifted the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup in his second season at Barça. Alves was instrumental in Barcelona's victory of their third consecutive Liga title in the 2010–11 season.

Barcelona defeated Manchester United 3–1 at Wembley Stadium on May 28th, winning its third European Cup final.

Alves was part of a Barcelona squad that won the Copa del Rey and the Club World Cup in 2011-12. Alves claimed the Liga title for the third time in his five seasons at Barça in 2012.

Alves wore shirt number 22, formerly worn by his friend Eric Abidal, to whom he promised to donate a portion of his liver during Abidal's liver cancer treatment.

Barça began winning their fifth European Cup by beating Juventus at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on June 6, 2015, beating Alves in the 2015 Champions League final. This made Barcelona the first club to win the treble of domestic league, domestic cup, and European Cup twice. The only players to have been a member of both treble-winning teams are Alves, Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta, Xavi, Gerard Piqué, Pedro, and Sergio Busquets.

Alves joined Barcelona on June 9th, extending his two-year deal until June 30, 2017, with the option to extend a year.

Alves' manager Luis Enrique pulled him out of the match against Valencia after Barcelona was eliminated by compatriot Atlético Madrid in the quarter-finals of the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League, posting it on Instagram; manager Luis Enrique later barred him from the following match against Valencia.

Alves's technical secretary, Roberto Fernández, announced on June 2nd that he would leave Barcelona this summer after eight years. Despite being under a year of service as a free agent, Alves' deal did not allow him to leave as a free agent until June 30.

Juventus announced the signing of Alves on a two-year contract with the option of a third year on June 27th. In Serie A, he made his Juventus debut on August 20 in a 2–1 home win over Fiorentina. In a 4–0 home win over Cagliari, Alves scored his first goal, before opening his Champions League account against Dinamo Zagreb six days later. In Juventus' 3–1 loss to Genoa on November 27, he sustained a fractured leg. In a 1–0 Derby d'Italia triumph over Internazionale on Friday, Alves returned from injury as a replacement.

Juventus defeated Monaco 2–1 on May 9, 2017 to qualify for the 2017 Champions League final. Alves scored once and assisted a goal for Mario Manduki. In the first leg of the match at the Stade Louis II, six days before, Alves had scored both goals for Gonzalo Higuain. In the 2017 Coppa Italia Finals, Alves scored the first goal of a 2–0 victory over Lazio on May 17th. Juventus lost 4–1 by Real Madrid at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on June 3rd, Alves' third appearance in the UEFA Champions League final.

Alves' deal with Juventus was ended by mutual consent on June 29, 2017. In his first season in Turin, he made 33 appearances, winning the 2016-17 Serie A title and 2016–17 Coppa Italia.

Alves joined French side Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, completing a two-year deal on July 12, 2017. He made his debut for the club on July 29th in the 2017 Trophée des Champions, scoring once and assisting the winning goal for Adrien Rabiot in a 2–1 victory over 2016-17 Ligue 1 champions Monaco. Alves assisted Edinson Cavani for PSG's first goal of the 2017–18 Ligue 1 season in a 2–0 victory over Amiens at the Parc des Princes on August 5th.

Thomas Meunier started competing in the 2018 Coupe de France Final on May 8, 2018 after PSG defeated Les Herbiers VF 2–0 to clinch the 2017–18 Coupe de France title; he came off in the 86th minute after suffering an injury.

Mário Zagallo, the Brazilian legend and four-time World Cup champion, was promoted from 32 to 13 in honor of Brazilian legend and four-time World Cup champion Mário Zagallo on August 28, 2018.

Alves became a free agent after his deal with the club came to an end on June 30, 2019.

S.o Paulo reported the signing of Dani Alves on a 2022 contract that will run until December 2022. Sonia Paulo, Alves' lifelong supporter, had expressed himself on several occasions that he had expressed his interest in playing for the club. He was welcomed at the Morumbi stadium in front of 44,000 fans. The club's recent immigrants, including Hernanes, Kaká, and Lus Fabiano, were largely responsible for welcoming him.

On his arrival, Alves was given the number 10 shirt. He made his debut on August 18, 2019, scoring the only goal in a 1–0 league victory over Ceará at the Morumbi. Despite being a right-back throughout his career, he played in central midfield during his time in So Paulo, mainly during Fernando Diniz' tenure between 2019 and 2021. At the time of his arrival, he was also named first team captain. In 2021, new manager Hernán Crespo returned to Alves in a more defensive role, portraying him as a right-sided wingback. Miranda, who was returning to the team after a decade, received the captain's armband at the same time. In May, he secured his first championship with the club and his 42nd of his career, as well as So Paulo's 8-year trophyless period.

Following a controversy over unpaid image rights, Alves' representatives told S'o Paulo that he would no longer return to training and subsequently play for the club on September 10-21. Six days later, his deal was ended.

Barcelona announced an agreement in principle to sign Alves on a contract until the end of the season on November 12th. He was only available for the team's official matches beginning in January 2022. He made his second appearance for the Blaugrana in December 2021 in a friendly against Diego Maradona, a game against Boca Juniors, and made his debut in official matches for the Blaugrana on January 5th 2022. He scored in Barça's 4–2 home win over Atlético Madrid in the league on Sunday for the first time since returning; he later scored an assist for Jordi Alba; and was suspended for a foul on Yannick Carrasco in the same game.

Alves revealed on Instagram on June 15th that he would leave Barcelona for the second time, the second most by a player from abroad, with only Lionel Messi having played more.

Alves signed a one-year deal with Liga MX team UNAM on July 23, 2022.

International career

Alves made his Brazil debut as a replacement in an unofficial friendly match against Kuwaiti club Al-Kuwait Selection on October 7, 2006. In a friendly against Ecuador three days later, he earned his first international cap. He was included in Brazil's squad for the 2007 Copa América. In the 3–0 victory, he appeared in four games, including the final against Argentina on July 15th, where he assisted Roberto Ayala's own goal and scored a goal himself.

Despite being the most expensive right-back in history at the time, he was initially struggling to secure a regular starting position in Brazil's national team, with Maicon being the first choice ahead of him. Alves came on as a replacement in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final against South Africa, winning by a 1-0 margin, a free-kick, and a goal. He was named in Brazil's squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in the summer. On October 7, 2010, he scored his second long-range free-kick against Iran. Alves was selected in Brazil's 23-man squad for the 2011 Copa América in Argentina the following year.

Alves was one of 23 players called by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari to compete in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup on home soil. On June 30, Brazil's 3–0 victory over Spain in the final, at the Maracan Stadium, got him off to a 3–0 win.

Alves was named in Brazil's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on home soil on May 7th, 2014. He lost his place as a starter in the tournament due to poor results. Alves and teammate David Luiz were praised for comforting James Rodr1 in the quarter-finals, and both Rodrand and the media lauded for their acts of admiration.

Both the 2015 and Centenary Copa América tournaments were selected by boss Dunga. Following Tite's appointment and aiding Brazil in qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, he kept his position, but was disqualified from the tournament due to a knee injury suffered in the 2018 Coupe de France Final.

He was a member of Brazil's 23-man team for the 2019 Copa América on home soil in May 2019. Neymar was recalled as Brazil's captain for the tournament, and he was able to make him the tournament's captain. Alves won 5–0 in the team's last group match against Peru in Sao Paulo on June 22, allowing Brazil to advance to the quarter-finals. Brazil defeated Peru once more in the final on July 7th and won the title 3–1; Alves was later named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The 2019 Copa América was his 40th title of his career.

Alves was drafted in the Brazil squad for the 2020 Summer Olympics on June 17th, 2021. Brazil defeated Spain and claimed the gold medal after a 2–1 win and an extra time goal by Malcom. He became the third oldest footballer to ever win a medal in the men's Olympic football tournament, behind Ryan Giggs in 2012 and Riccini in 1988.
