Atandwa Kani Career

Career

Kani made his international debut in The Tempest, a collaboration between the Baxter Theatre Centre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, in which he performed Ariel alongside his father (Caliban) and Sir Antony Sher (Prote). "The actor of this production was a real pleasure to watch, embodieing the character and performing well with the rest of the cast," one reviewer said. "scene-stealing Atandwa Kani, the best Ariel I've ever seen," Nottingham News' Sean Hewitt wrote.

Kani made his television debut in 2009 in the CW Television Network program Life Is Wild, an American version of the massively popular ITV family drama Wild at Heart, which aired in the United Kingdom from 2006 to 2012. Kani appeared in only one season, but he appeared in series 5 and 6, as well as a brief appearance in series 7, starring Stephen Tompkinson and Dawn Steele.

Kani appeared in two new plays, Hayani and ID Pending, which explored themes of home and culture for young South Africans in different ways. They premiered the performances at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival with fellow actor and Wits graduate Nat Ramabulana, directed by Warren Nebe.

In the first of its In Bed With... features, Kani has been included in the TrueLove magazine. In 2010, he appeared on SABC TV show Soul Buddyz as a regular actor. He became a regular on the SABC 2 political drama 90 Plein Street in its third season, directed by Khalo Matabane. He served as Master of Ceremonies for the 46664 "Legacy" Bangle, as well as Tokyo Sexwale and Hlubi Mboya.

He then proceeded to play young Nelson Mandela in the film Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom, directed by Justin Chadwick, starring Idris Elba, Naomie Harris, and Terry Pheto.

Kani went on to lead Kowethu, a SABC 1 drama directed by Rolie Nikiwe. After that appearance, he was seen alongside Cuba Gooding Jr. in the international BET series The Book of Negroes.

Kani began to perform Black & Blue at the Market Theatre in 2014 with the help of Sylvaine Strike. In New York City, he also performed Sizwe Banzi Is Dead, which was directed by Dr. John Kani. They are currently planning for a South African tour of this performance.

Kani has recently appeared in the hit Mzansi Magic TV series It's Complicated.

Kani attended the African premiere of The Suit, a short film in which he portrays Philemon, at the Old Fort of Zanzibar as part of the 19th Zanzibar International Film Festival on Tuesday. Jarryd Coetsee, a South African filmmaker, wrote and directed the film, which was based on Can Themba's short story. Despite the fact that the film was not a participant in the official competition, the jury gave it a Special Mention.

Kani portrayed younger King T'Chaka, a dual role shared with his father, John Kani, in the film Black Panther, in 2018.
