Adhir Kalyan (born 4 August 1983) is a South African-born actor best known for his role as Timmy in the CBS sitcom Rules of Engagement.

Early life

Kalyan was born in Durban, South Africa, to an Indian South African family. Santosh Vinita "Sandy" Kalyan, his mother, was a member of Parliament in South Africa's National Assembly, where she represented the Democratic Alliance.

Kalyan completed his education at Marklands in Durban. He appeared in several productions in South Africa prior to heading to the United States, including theatrical adaptations of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol, a Salman Rushdie's version of The Ground Beneath Her Feet, and the classical Shakespearean play Macbeth.

Personal life

He proposed to actress Emily Wilson of GE in March 2015. Wilson and Wilson married in Palm Springs, California, on October 1, 2016.

Career

In 2005, Kalyan moved to London to continue his acting career as Arjmand Younis, in Spooks (series 5), and Ramal Kirmani on Ireland's RTÉ One in Fair City. Kalyan has also appeared in a number of independent films.

As a foreign exchange student from Pakistan living with a Wisconsin family, Kalyan appeared in the short-lived American television network sitcom Aliens in America. In the fifth season of the cable television show Nip/Tuck and the third season of CBS' Rules of Engagement, he portrayed recurring characters in the former's fourth season, making him a series regular in the latter's fourth season.

In Up in the Air as a fired employee and in the cheerleader comedy Fired Up, Kalyan appeared in the film Paul Blart: Mall Cop as Pahud, a teen who adored his girlfriend Parisa. He appeared in Youth in Revolt in 2010, and in 2011, he appeared in No Strings Attached, a youth incarnation.

He began acting in the Fox science fiction crime drama Second Chance in late 2015.

In December 2019, Kalyan was portrayed by French actress Awalmir Karimi ("Al"), the principal protagonist in the CBS sitcom United States of Al. On April 1, 2021, the sitcom premiered, amid of controversies. The show and its creators were chastised for the show's humor, use of antiquated tropes, and, in particular, critics opposed the casting of a South-African-born Indian actor in an Afghan lead and the use of an inauthentic accent.
