Ashley McBryde (born July 29, 1983) is an American country music singer-songwriter.
Jalopies and Exotic Guitars, her second album, was released by Road Life Records on March 10, 2016.
During the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, her major label debut album Girl Going Nowhere, which includes the single "A Little Dive Bar in Dahlonega," was released via Warner Music Nashville to critical acclaim and securing her a Grammy nomination for Best Country Album.
During the 53rd Annual Country Music Association Awards, she was named New Artist of the Year.
Early life
McBryde was born in Saddle, Arkansas. Her father was a preacher, resulting in her family's growing up in a strict household. "I don't ever remember not owning a weapon or a Bible while growing up." "He led us in that way, as cruel as it is, and as sweet as it sounds," she told Billboard. As a child, she was attracted to the sounds she heard around her house, which included songs by The Carpenters and Kris Kristofferson. She loved playing with her father's guitar, which prompted her family to buy McBryde her own guitar. At age 12, McBryde wrote her first song and aspired to become a singer-songwriter. She and her mother also went to bluegrass festivals, which inspired her musical career.
McBryde played in the high school band before attending Arkansas State University, where she studied the French horn. She was also active in clubs based in Memphis, Tennessee, where she was based. A college professor noticed her disinterest in her research and encouraged McBryde to quit studying to pursue music full-time in one class session. "So I did, that day," she said.
Personal life
Clay McBryde, McBryde's brother, died at the age of 53 in 2018. His death was not announced at the time. McBryde has discussed her father's struggle as a result of her decision to pursue a career in music. "A Bible and a 44" is my father's favorite song ever written about him, and I don't agree with any of his children's careers being in any sort of entertainment industry." Anyone in the entertainment industry should not make their living off the entertainment industry," she told Taste of Country.
McBryde was forced to postpone a few concerts in the midst of her headline This Town Talks Tour being stranded after falling off a horse and landing on her head in September 2021. The concussion sparked a concussion and a need for stitches on her scalp.
Career
McBryde self-released an eponymous demo album in 2006. McBryde went to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2007 to pursue a music career. She began performing with the band Deadhorse and appeared at every gig she could get. There were biker bars and hangouts, as well as other quirky venues in the Nashville area. She also worked at Guitar Center as a day job and appeared at open mic nights. She won the annual Country Showdown talent competition in 2009 and 2010. McBryde's band also won Tennessee's state-wide "Battle of the Bands" competition. Elsebound, Jessica's second demo album, was self-released in 2011. McBryde also toured often during this period. Willie Nelson, Chris Stapleton, and Chris Cagle were among the country entertainers who opened concerts for country musicians.
McBryde produced the extended play (EP) Jalopies & Exotic Guitars in 2016. Road Life Records was the project's manager. McBryde was told to straighten her hair and make other cosmetic improvements to her appearance for the record. "We were trying to play the game," she told The New York Times. Eric Church, who welcomed McBryde to perform her song "Bible and a.44" onstage with him one night of his "Holdin' My Own" tour, was discovered on the EP. The video of her appearance went viral, and she was soon finding regular concert dates. During the same period, she signed a Q Publishing management contract. Around the same time, McBryde recorded what would be her debut studio album sometime. Cris Lacy, a senior vice president for Warner Music Nashville, heard about the initiative. Lacy was attracted to her music and negotiated McBryde to a recording contract with the label in September 2017.
In 2017, Warner Music released McBryde's debut single, "A Little Dive Bar in Dahlonega." The album became a more popular download, with higher success on iTunes than those of more established bands like Paramore. Both Billboard's Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs charts ranked the song at number 30. It was later identified as one of the Best Country Songs of 2017 by The New York Times, and as one of the Top 25 Best Country Songs of 2017 by Rolling Stone. Girl Going Nowhere, the label's debut studio album, debuted in March 2018. The disc debuted at number seven on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and number 49 on the Billboard 200. Critics lauded Girl Going Nowhere for going beyond country music's hopes for a record. McBryde pushed for quality music over radio-friendly hits, according to other commentators, but McBryde was unconcerned. She's on a journey to career longevity, and Nowhere is her confident and solid first step." The album debuted as a single in the Country Airplay top 40, which debuted as a single.
McBryde appeared at the Grand Ole Opry in 2017 for the first time and was nominated by the Grammy Awards around the same time. In addition, McBryde received both the Academy of Country Music's "New Female Artist of the Year" award and the Country Music Association's "New Artist of the Year" award. McBryde made her first appearance as a headlining act in fall 2018. She appeared on several concert dates with George Strait and Little Big Town in 2019.
McBryde's lead single from her forthcoming album, "One Night Standards," was released in September 2019. It later became her first top 20 single on both the Billboard Country Airplay and Country Songs charts. The song in Canada ranked at number one on their country chart. It appeared on McBryde's second album, titled Never Will, in April 2020. Jay Joyce's album was her second to be released by her. Never Will was McBryde's second to crack the top ten of the Country Albums chart and her second to debut a charting position on the Billboard 200. Critics compared her debut album to her own. "The air of defiance in Never Will's second major-label album sets hopes for Ashley McBryde's second major-label album, mirroring how the title Girl Going Nowhere framed the understanding for the 11 songs on her brilliant 2018 debut," wrote AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine. The Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association (ACM) gave McBryde's album and lead single more accolades. In addition, the charting single "Martha Divine" was born from her second album in late 2020.
McBryde also launched Never Will: Live from a Distance, which postponed concert dates due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, she returned to performing with This Town Talks, her second headlining tour. Later this year, she collaborated with Carly Pearce on the duet "Never Wanted to Be That Girl," which was released as a single in September 2021 and later became the country Airplay champion's first top ten hit on the Country Airplay chart.
McBryde completed her apprenticeship on two studio albums in September 2022. She postponed the debut of what was expected to be her third major label album in order to debut Lindeville, a collaboration of nine key collaborators, including Brandy Clark and Caylee Hammack. The album, which was based on the theory of creating a fictional town for the characters in her songs, was based on the concept of constructing a fictional town for the characters in her songs to live. The album was released on September 30, 2022.
