Ananda Lewis Career

Career

Lewis appeared in the hit R&B video created on campus by fellow HU alumni Shai, "Baby, I'm Yours." Carl "Groove" Martin, a vocalist, was portrayed in her romance tale.

Lewis served as a mentor with Youth at Risk and at the Youth Leadership Institute throughout college. When she learned that auditions were going to be held for the position of on-screen host of BET's Teen Summit, she was considering going to graduate school to pursue a master's degree in education. She claims that the children she was living with that summer were the primary ones urging her to audition.

Lewis' audition was a hit, and she took over the Teen Summit as the host. For three seasons, she addressed current topics that affect teens and a large television audience. Lewis was able to fulfill her passion for helping young people and use her talents she had acquired at San Diego's performing-arts school. Lewis interviewed then-First Lady Hillary Clinton, whose book with the same name had been published earlier this year, on an installment of the show "It Takes a Village." Lewis was also nominated for a CableACE Award in 1996, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) presented Lewis with an Image Award next year for her work on Black Entertainment Television (BET). Lewis was given a position as a program host and video jockey shortly afterward by MTV. The thought of leaving Teen Summit was traumatic for her; indeed, several outlets quoted her as saying she "cried for three weeks" while considering her choices. The possibility of greatly raising the number of her viewing audience and the possibility of influencing America's youth was determining in her decision to switch to MTV.

Lewis hosted and VJed a variety of shows, including Total Request Live, a daily top ten video countdown show, and Hot Zone, which featured both music videos and Lewis' interviews of musicians and others. On one of her shows on The Hot Zone, she rated rapper Q-Tip for the number of scantily clad dancers in one of his songs. "Our talent was often pretty people who could read cue cards," Lewis's broadcasting skills, according to Douglas O's senior vice president for production." But we knew we'd do a lot more live television when we brought Ananda to MTV. MTV has also requested Lewis to host other MTV forums on violence in schools, including two MTV forums on violence in schools, which aired after the Columbine High School massacre and several memorial tributes to singer Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash in 2001. Lewis also received another NAACP Image Award in 2001 for her role as host of MTV's popular show "I Am Driving Although Black."

Lewis made news when she announced that she planned to remain unemployed for at least six months while on MTV in 1998.

She states:

Lewis became a regular presence at celebrity-attended events in and around New York City during this period. "If you don't recognize the name Ananda Lewis, it may be because you're older than 23, not a hip-hop singer, or not a regular supplicant in the land of the velvet ropes." "Ms. Lewis has emerged as the reigning 'It Girl' in the hip-hop decade,' meaning she is not just an MTV celebrity but also a woman whose looks and demeanor have made her constantly in demand."

People on People's list of the world's "50 Most Beautiful People" in 2000 included Lewis. Lewis left MTV in 2001 in order to launch her own talk show. After a lot of advance media in which Lewis Lewis was compared to Oprah Winfrey, the Ananda Lewis Show debuted on September 10, 2001. After her show had begun, Lewis continued to do special presentations for MTV. Lewis's collection, which was syndicated by King World Productions, targeted women aged eighteen to thirty-four by addressing such topics as domestic violence and breast cancer; it was sold as an alternative to Jerry Springer and Ricki Lake's sensational and provocative daytime shows, which were then dominating daytime ratings. Lewis' show appeared on some WB and NBC stations before being cancelled after one season. "We started on a Monday and then the World Trade Center bombing the next day, and everything has become a mess since then," Roger King, chairman and CEO of King World Productions and CBS Enterprises. Lewis started working with BET for a short time.

Lewis became the chief correspondent on celebrity topics for the nationally syndicated, nightly entertainment show The Insider, a spin-off of Entertainment Tonight, in 2004. She interviewed Paris Hilton, Dylan Ryder, Don Cheadle, Ryan Phillippe, Ryan Phillippe, and actor Dyan Cannon in the spring of 2005. Lewis herself has appeared on several sitcoms.

In 2004, Ms. Lewis appeared on ABC's reality show Celebrity Mole: Yucatán. This reality show received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Enhanced Television.

Lewis, an avid animal lover, has appeared on the A&E television network as co-host of America's Top Dog and as a spokesperson for the Humane Society. She has been known to often mention her two pet chihuahuas to interviewers. She has also worked for Reading Is Fundamental, a non-profit literacy group.
