Career
When Ling was selected as one of the four hosts of Scratch, a nationally syndicated teen magazine show based in Sacramento, she got her start on television. She joined Channel One News as one of their youngest reporters and anchors at the age of 18. War correspondent, which included stints in Iraq and Afghanistan, was one of her duties. She has received several awards for her reporting and documentaries.
She joined The View on August 2, 1999 after beating out a total of 12,000 candidates who had applied to replace Debbie Matenopoulos but the program was postponed for three and a half years until 2002, when she returned to international reporting. According to Ling, she was in charge of developing segments such as investing for women and wanted to say one thing each day that would make them laugh or make them throw things at their televisions. She retweeted her remarks after the September 11, 2001 attacks, in which she said, "What happened to the United States was a catastrophic event and the deadliest terrorist attack in human history." However, we should ask the question before we seek revenge: "Why would anyone want to make such an attack on the United States?"
Ling accepted the invitation to host National Geographic Ultimate Explorer. The show then moved to the National Geographic Channel in 2005 and the National Geographic Explorer was renamed "National Geographic Explorer" in honor of its original title. Ling has covered Colombia's heroin war, investigated the notorious MS-13 gang, and investigated the US prison system. She was also allowed to fly into North Korea as part of a medical missionary group, where she and a film crew were able to film a rare glimpse of North Korea. In the 2007 National Geographic documentary "Inside North Korea," the trip was chronicled.
She then became a special correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show, which has included several of Ling's investigative reports, including a study on North Korea. "Oprah Show Investigative Reporter" is Ling's title. She has covered the immediate aftermath of the hurricane's destruction in New Orleans and the 2007 Virginia Tech Massacre in India, gang rape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, child trafficking in Ghana, and child trafficking in Zimbabwe.
Ling appeared in CNN's second installment, "Battlelines," in December 2008. She followed excessive shark poaching in Costa Rica, elephant poaching in Chad, and delved into Nigeria's civil war for control of its oil as a reporter. Ling co-founded SecretSocietyOfWomen.com, a forum for women to voice their problems anonymously.
