Rachel Anne Maddow (listen), MAD-oh; born April 1, 1973) is an American television news program host and liberal political commentator.

Maddow co-anchor and a nightly television show on MSNBC, and she appears as the channel's special event co-anchor alongside Brian Williams.

On Air America Radio, her syndicated talk radio show of the same name appeared. Maddow earned a bachelor's degree in public policy and a doctorate in political science from Oxford University, becoming the first openly lesbian anchor to host a major prime-time news program in the United States.

When asked about her political views by the Valley Advocate, Maddow replied, "I'm unquestionably a liberal, which means that I'm in utter agreement with the Eisenhower-era Republican party platform."

Early life and education

Maddow was born in Castro Valley, California. Robert B. Maddow, her father, resigned from his service a year before her birth and then practiced as a prosecutor for the East Bay Municipal Utility District. Elaine (née Gosse), her mother, was a school program administrator. David, her older brother, is the older brother she has. Her paternal grandfather came from a family of Jews (the original family surname being "Medvedof"), who came from the Russian Empire to the United States. Her paternal grandmother was of Dutch descent. Maddow's Canadian mother, who immigrated from Newfoundland and Labrador, has an English and Irish ancestry.

Maddow has said that her family is "very Catholic" and she grew up in a family that her mother has described as "very conservative." Maddow competed in high school volleyball, basketball, and swimming.

Maddow has described herself as "a cross between the jock and the antisocial girl" in high school, referring to John Hughes' films. She is a graduate of Castro Valley High School and attended Stanford University. She was outed as a lesbian by the college newspaper when an interview with her was published before she could tell her parents.

In 1994, she earned a bachelor's degree in public policy at Stanford. She was given the John Gardner Fellowship at graduation. She was the recipient of a Rhodes Scholarship and began her postgraduate study at Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1995. She had been given a Marshall Scholarship the previous year but turned it down in favour of the Rhodes. This made her the first openly lesbian winner of the Rhodes Scholarship. She obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in politics at the University of Oxford in 2001. Her thesis, entitled HIV/AIDS and Health Care Reform in British and American Prisons, was released by Lucia Zedner, her boss.

Personal life

Maddow splits her time between Manhattan, New York, and West Cummington, Massachusetts, with her partner, artist Susan Mikula. They first met in 1999, when Maddow was doing her doctoral dissertation at the University of Ontario.

Maddow has suffered with cyclical depression since puberty. "It doesn't take away from my hobby, my job, or my energy," she said in a 2012 interview, but dealing with depression is part of the everyday life and life of the author. "It was a difficult call... Because it was nobody's company." In interviews, she explained why she decided to talk about it: "It was a difficult call... Since it wasn't nobody's company." Nonetheless, it had been instructive to me to discover that people who were surviving were leading happy lives despite the fact that they were suffering from depression. So I felt it was a bit of a responsibility to pay it back."

"I do three things to stay sane," Maddow said.

Trump campaign furiously denies that former president fell asleep in court during hush money trial

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 16, 2024
The New York Times claimed that Trump struggled to stay awake and eventually dozed off as jury selection got underway at his hush money trial in New York. The claim sparked a wave of hashtags on social media and was leapt on by the Biden Harris campaign - long dogged by Trump's nickname of 'Sleepy Joe' for the sitting president. But it was dismissed as '100 percent fake news' by the former president's campaign team who insisted he was the victim of a malicious media. 'This is 100% Fake News coming from 'journalists' who weren't even in the court room,' they said in a statement.

NBC's Joy Reid and Rachel Maddow rejoice in ex-RNC chair Ronna McDaniel's firing - as boss's spineless memo apologizing to left-leaning reporters is revealed

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 27, 2024
Joy Reid and Rachel Maddow of NBC rejoiced when they learned that Ronna McDaniel, the ex-RNC chair, had been fired after being subjected to vehement criticism from the far-left anchors. Cesar Conde, the NBCUniversal News Group chairman, delivered an apology note to staffers on Tuesday announcing that McDaniel was no longer available. The News Group has no doubt that the last few days have been difficult.' After listening to many of you's valid concerns, I've come to the conclusion that Ronna McDaniel will not be a NBC News contributor.'

Ronna McDaniel, the RNC chair, has been fired by NBC less than a week after being announced

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 26, 2024
McDaniel was only announced as a controversial new analyst for the network on Friday, but her selection led to an internal rebellion that swelled into on-air rants by the liberal hosts. Chuck Todd, a senior political analyst, erupted into an on-air debate over McDaniel's recruiting, particularly attacking Donald Trump's false 2020 election fraud allegations. Todd's meltdown was quickly followed by other liberal media stars, with MSNBC host Rachel Maddow describing the recruitment as "inexplicable" and saying she hoped bosses would reconsider the call.'
