Alphonse Areola Career

Club career

Areola played football for the first time at the age of six for Entente Sportive des Petits Anges and spent seven years with his hometown team before deciding on Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1. Areola was 15 years old when he was asked by mentors in Paris to further his growth. In July 2009, he returned to PSG for his first professional deal with the Parisians, putting pen to paper on a three-year contract.

Areola made his senior debut for PSG in the 48th minute of a 3-1 home victory over Brest on May 18, 2013. Prior to the game, PSG had been named Ligue 1 champions, but opponents had already been relegated. In a 3–1 victory over Lorient, he made his first appearance for the club the following weekend, playing 61 minutes in what was the final game of the season before being ruled out for fourth-choice 'keeper Ronan Le Crom, who was suspended later in the match due to a foul on Julien Quercia.

He was loaned to Ligue 2 team Lens, who were formerly PSG boss Antoine Kombouaré, from 2013–14 Ligue 1 season. Rudy Riou was displaced as the club's starting 'keeper and made 36 appearances for the season, including in which was his first appearance in Coupe de France. He also helped the team finish in second place in the league, and earned promotion to Ligue 1. Areola's results over the course of the year earned him the Ligue 2 Goalkeeper of the Year award and a spot in the Team of the Season. He was also named winner of the Eurosport Revelation of the Year award, beating N'Golo Kante and Gatan Bussmann in a competition. A verbal deal was in place for Areola to remain on loan for the following season, but the club's financial situation sparked questions with the League's National Directorate of Management Control, who later weighed on the likelihood of him returning.

Areola will continue to play in Ligue 1, but Bastia, Claude Makélélé's Bastia, has stepped in to sign him on loan for the 2014--15 Ligue 1 campaign, with the contract concluded on July 26, 2014. In a 3–3 draw with Marseille on August 9, Signed as the replacement for the club's defunct Mickal Landreau. Areola's 39 appearances in all competitions for the club included 13 clean sheets as Bastia's Bastia finished the Ligue 1 season in 12th place and as runners-up in the Coupe de la Ligue. The Final, which took place on April 11th, was fought between Bastia and Areola's parent club PSG, with the match ending 4–0 in favour of the Parisians.

Villarreal's Sergio Asenjo, a regular 'keeper, sustained a long-term injury the year before on June 17, 2015. In a 1–1 draw with Real Betis on the first day of the season, he made his debut for the club. Areola's reputation soared in 2003-Last in La Liga, with 15 clean sheets in 37 games and conceding only 26 goals. Jan Oblak of Atlético Madrid and Claudio Bravo of Barcelona topped his clean-sheet total for the league season. Areola also tied for 615 minutes of football played without conceding a goal that had been previously held by Diego López, who was later disqualified before losing to Las Palmas. The Frenchman appeared in the Europa League for the first time in his career, appearing five times as El Submarino Amarillo reached the semi-finals, losing to eventual runners-up Liverpool.

Areola returned to PSG for the 2016-17 Ligue 1 season after a fruitful stint in Spain. He began the season understudy to German keeper Kevin Trapp, who had signed the season before and was in PSG's match-day squad for Lyon's 4–1 Trophée des Champions victory. In what was also his first appearance in the competition, he made his first appearance following his return to France in a 1-1 Champions League draw with Arsenal on September 13th. Areola established himself as PSG's first-choice goalkeeper following the match against Arsenal and had kept four clean sheets in eight appearances by mid-October. Nonetheless, he returned to form shortly after and ultimately relinquished his position to Trapp after a string of games in December in which he conceded ten goals from just 11 shots faced. PSG beat Monaco 4–1 in April to win a historic Coupe de la Ligue title, but PSG beat Angers 1–0, giving PSG a landmark fourth straight Coupe de la Ligue title that was not claimed by the following month.

Areola also earned his second Trophée des Champions medal on July 29th when he took the first title from PSG, who also claimed their fifth consecutive title. He continued his season as PSG's undisputed goalkeeper in the league and Europe, with Trapp preferred in cup tournaments, and was a regular fixture in the club's epic climb to the Champions League's group stages. PSG lost just once in their first five matches and scored 24 goals, the most ever by a club in the group stages of the tournament, with Areola in goal. Areola was an ineffective substitute as PSG maintained the Coupe de la Ligue title with a 3–0 win over Monaco on March 31, 2018. PSG defeated Monaco, who were the reigning league champions, 7–1 to win the Ligue 1 title in the following month. He started in goal on April 15th. The club won the Coupe de France trophy for the fourth straight season on May 8th, defeating third division team Les Herbiers for a record fourth season; however, Areola was an unused substitute in the final.

Areola was relegated to a rotational position during the upcoming season after the club signed veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon from Juventus. During a 3–1 victory over Monaco on the same day that the club claimed its eighth league title, he made his 100th appearance PSG appearance.

Areola returned to Spain on September 2nd, 2019 as part of a contract that saw Keylor Navas move in the opposite direction to PSG. He made his club debut on September 25th, leading to a 2–0 league victory over Osasuna. However, he was mostly used as a back-up plan to first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for the remainder of the season and made only nine appearances across all leagues, including four appearances during the league season, as Real defeated the 2019–20 La Liga title.

Areola signed for Fulham on a season-long loan with the ability to buy on September 9, 2020. In the EFL Cup, he made his EFL debut for the club against Ipswich Town one week later. Fulham was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season, and Areola's option to buy was not pursued by the London club. However, he did win Fulham Player of the Season as voted by the supporters.

West Ham United announced the signing of Areola on a season-long loan agreement with the option to buy on July 29th, 2021. In a 1–0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup on September 22, he made his debut on his debut in a 1–0 triumph. In the 1-0 EFL Cup third-round victory over Manchester United on September 22, 2021, he made his West Ham United debut.

International career

Areola represented France at every youth level from U16 to U21 between 2008 and 2014. In the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup Final, he was the hero for France. With goalless after extra time, the game came to a penalty shoot out, where Areola saved spot-kicks from Uruguay's Emiliano Velázquez and Giorgian De Arrascaeta to lead their country to their first ever victory in the tournament. He had previously worked for France in the 2010 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and the 2012 UEFA European Under-19 Championships, as well as the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Areola's first call-up to the senior team by manager Didier Deschamps on October 1st, 2015, as part of the French team's preparations to host UEFA Euro 2016. He was unable to make the tournament team but would be called up on three occasions for friendlies and World Cup qualifiers from September to November 2016, but was forced to withdraw from the second team due to spraining his ankle.

He was selected in Deschamps' 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia on May 17. As France went on to lift the trophy, he appeared as Hugo Lloris and Steve Mandanda. Despite being uncapped for his country at the time, he became the first player to lift the World Cup trophy since Argentina's Héctor Zelada in 1986. Areola was named France's starting goalkeeper for the country's first UEFA Nations League match against Germany on September 6th, later this year, and due to a thigh injury suffered by Lloris. On his senior international debut, he kept a clean sheet and was named Man of the match in the match, which resulted in a goalless draw.

West Ham 1-3 Man City PLAYER RATINGS: Which City star is justifying his selection ahead of Kyle Walker? Who showed he's an able deputy for Rodri? And who struggled for the Hammers?

KATHRYN BATTE AT THE LONDON STADIUM: Erling Haaland made it back-to-back hat-tricks in the Premier League as Manchester City beat West Ham 3-1 at the London Stadium. Just a week on from his heroics against newly-promoted Ipswich, the unstoppable Haaland put the Hammers to the sword after scoring three stunning goals. His first was placed coolly beyond Alphonse Areola to hand the reigning champions the lead while his second, a crashing effort that hurtled into the roof of the net from 10 yards out, restored City's advantage after Ruben Dias' own goal. West Ham pushed for an equaliser, with Mohammed Kudus clattering the woodwork, but City wrapped up the three points when Haaland dinked over Lukasz Fabianski.

Ex-referee Dermot Gallagher calls out Anthony Taylor's BLUNDER, while Stephen Warnock claims he got himself 'in a right mess' - after Liverpool were controversially denied a late chance to win against West Ham

With four minutes remaining of their London Stadium clash last weekend, Hammers goalkeeper Alphonse Areola fell to the ground after collecting the ball from a cross into the box. He took his time to get back to his feet and referee Taylor waved play on and did not blow the whistle. Areola then rolled the ball out and Cody Gakpo ran towards the French goalkeeper in an attempt to pass the ball into an empty net. However, Taylor then blew his whistle with no explanation and stopped the Dutchman from potentially giving Liverpool the lead late on. Speaking on Sky Sports' Ref Watch, Gallagher conceded that the experienced official handled the situation poorly and he urged Taylor to 'keep it simple' and blow his whistle in the future.
