Pan-Africanism is a writer, sociolog, Civil Rights lawyer, and promoter of Pan-Africanism. The Souls of Black Folk (1903) and Black Reconstruction in America (1935).

Before Fame

When he graduated from high school, his childhood church raised funds to pay for his college tuition. He later attended Fisk University and, later, Harvard University, and went on to become both a professor at Atlanta University and a leader of the Niagara Movement.

Trivia

He was the first African American to receive a doctorate from Harvard University.

Family Life

He was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, to Alfred and Mary Silvina Du Bois. He married Nina Gomer in 1896, with whom he had a son (who died as a child) and a daughter. Shirley Graham, a playwright and activist, died after his first wife's death.
