Wayne Michael Coyne (born January 13, 1961) is an American singer.
He is the lead singer, occasional backing vocalist, keyboardist, theremin player, and songwriter for the band The Flaming Lips.
Early life
Coyne was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States, and the son of Thomas Coyne and Dolores "Dolly" Jackson. Coyne, the fifth of six children of an Irish Catholic family, and his family immigrated with his family from Pittsburgh's Troy Hill neighborhood to Oklahoma in early 1961. Coyne grew up in Oklahoma City. Coyne adored listening to music and playing pickup football. For their tumultuous backyard football games, he, his sister, and his brothers dubbed themselves "The Fearless Freaks." Tommy Coyne, Coyne's older brother, characterized the games as a "semi-civilized team war conflict."
Coyne began working as a fry cook for a Long John Silver's restaurant in Oklahoma City in 1977, when he was in high school. In Oklahoma City, there was a spate of robberies in his second year of employment. The restaurant was robbed, and Coyne and other workers were arrested at gunpoint and coerced to lie on the ground. Coyne was certain he was going to die. The assistant manager was unable to open the restaurant's safe, however, and the robbers eventually left the restaurant. "This is really how you die," Coyne says, "you're just grilling up someone's order of french fries for one minute, and the next minute you're laying on the ground and blowing your brains out." There is no music, there is no point in it, it's just random." Coyne continued to work at Long John Silver's until 1990.
Personal life
Coyne lives in a four-story house building in the same neighborhood in which he grew up. Each Halloween, Coyne dresses up as a monster scared trick-or-treaters who come to his house. He believes that it is important to scare children because, as they get older, there are things "that are horribly scary." ..
