John Francis Bongiovi Jr. was born in Perth, New Jersey, son of two surviving Marines, barber John Francis Bongiovi Sr., and Playboy Bunny turned florist Carol (Sharkey). Anthony and Matthew are his two brothers. His father was of Italian origins (Bongiovi comes from Sciacca, Sicily), and Slovak ancestry, and his mother is of German and Russian descent. He has claimed that he is a blood relative of singer Frank Sinatra. Bon Jovi was raised Catholic. He spent summers in Erie, Pennsylvania, with his grandparents, and sold newspapers. During his freshman and sophomore years, John attended St. Joseph High School in Metuchen, New Jersey. He later attended Sayreville War Memorial High School in Parlin, New Jersey.

Musical career
Jon Bon Jovi started playing piano and guitar with his first band, Raze, in 1975, aged 13. He met David Bryan and formed Atlantic City Expressway, a 16-year-old boy who formed a band.
