Childhood and early years
Gahan was born as David Callcott into a working-class family with Len Callcott (a Malaysian bus driver) and his wife Sylvia (a conductress or "clippy") when his father left the family at six months old. Sylvia and Len married Sean Gahan, a Shell Oil administrator who was born 1960, after Sylvia and her mother, Sue (born 1960), to Basildon, Essex. With the birth of two more half-brothers Peter (born 1966) and Phil (born 1968), the Gahan family continued to grow. Dave and Sue were raised under the belief that Jack, their mother's second husband, was their natural father.
Gahan's stepfather died when he was 9 years old. When he was ten years old, his father appeared again. "I'll never forget the day." There was this stranger in my mother's house when I came home from school. My mother narrated him to me as my real dad. I remember thinking it was impossible because my father was dead. How was I supposed to know who this guy was? Len continued to visit the house from the day to the end until a year later, "this time."
Gahan, a student at Barstable School in Basildon, was banned from school and ended up in juvenile court three times for offenses ranging from joyriding and graffiti to criminal harm and theft. He loved stealing cars, racing them around, and dazzling them ablaze. "I was so wild," Gahan recalls at the time. I loved the excitement of nicking a motor, yelching away, and being chased by the cops. You'll get a kick out of hiding behind the wall with your heart beating,'" says the author. In his last year of classes, he applied for a job as an apprentice fitter with North Thames Gas. He was ordered by his probation officer to be honest with the interviewer, and as a result, he admitted his criminal history but claimed he was a "reformed person." As a result, he did not get the job, which, according to him, resulted in him destroying his probation officer's office. His term was serving at an attendance center in Romford for a year. "You had to work," Gahan says. I remember doing boxing and stuff like that. You had to have your hair cut. Every weekend, so you were out of your weekend and it seemed like forever. My next move, according to me, was detention center. "I'm going to be honest, music saved me."
Personal life
Gahan has lived in New York City since 1997. Jennifer Sklias Gahan, their daughter's third mother, and Jennifer’s son from a previous marriage, who Gahan officially adopted in 2010. Gahan also has a biological son named Jack from his first marriage to Joanne Fox. Teresa Conroy, a former Depeche Mode publicist, was Gahan's second wife.
Gahan is a convert to the Greek Orthodox Church. In a 2008 interview, he discussed his religious faith in the following words: "It's very confusing and has always been for thousands of years, and it will continue to be so for thousands of years." I'm not sure what it is, but I do know that I get a feeling of some sort of higher authority, but for the lack of better terms," it seems.
Gahan is a recovering heroin user. He has had four brushes with death, including the infamous "The Cat," which paramedics gave him during his roughest years in Los Angeles. Gahan suffered a minor drug-induced heart attack during a show in New Orleans in October 1993, causing his bandmates to improvise a new one without him. He attempted suicide by slashing his wrists in August 1995; Gahan later said that it was a "cry for assistance" and that he had "made sure there were people who might find me."
Gahan overdosed on a speedball at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in Los Angeles on May 28, 1996, resulting in his heart stopping for two minutes until he was revived by paramedics. He had an out-of-body experience: "All I saw and all I felt at first was complete darkness." I've never been in a space that was blacker, and I remember feeling that whatever it was doing, it was wrong. Then I remember being on the floor, on the steps outside my hotel bathroom, and there was a lot of activity going on around me. It was eerily liberating in some respects. I opened my mouth to find a cop handcuffing me. It was certainly not a destination I'd like to visit again," the author says. Gahan obtained assistance at a rehabilitation facility several months after being arrested on drugs.
Gahan, a composer from Athens, Greece, collapsed sick in his dressing room on May 12, 2009, shortly before Depeche Mode's concert for their Tour of the Universe. He was admitted to the hospital where it was suspected he was suffering from a bout of gastroenteritis. An ultrasound revealed a malignant tumor in his bladder, which was removed. Several shows were postponed, and Gahan underwent cancer treatment during the remaining three months of the tour.
While performing in Bilbao, Spain, on July 9, 2009, Gahan suffered a torn calf muscle, resulting in two more cancellations. He and Depeche Mode returned to the tour for their North American leg after a two-week break. Gahan strained his vocal cords while performing in Seattle on August 10th. Gahan's complete vocal rest was ordered by doctors, resulting in two more cancelled shows.
Gahan was honoured at the seventh annual MusiCares MAP Fund Benefit Concert in Los Angeles in May 2011 for more than ten years of sobriety.
Career in Depeche Mode (1980–present)
Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher, and Vince Clarke formed Composition of Sound in March 1980, with Clarke on vocals and guitar, Gore on keyboards, and Fletcher on bass. Clarke and Fletcher soon switched to synthesizers. After Clarke heard Gahan perform David Bowie's "Heroes" that year, the band reformed. After Gahan's discovery of a fashion magazine called Dépêche-mode, the band was renamed Depeche Mode. Depeche Mode, a new wave/synthpop pioneer of the early 1980s, has released 14 studio albums, four greatest hits compilations, and two remix albums. In excess of 100 million units worldwide, the band has sold over a million albums. On Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, four of the band's singles have reached number one: "Enjoy the Silence" (1990), "Policy of Truth" (1993), and "Walking in My Shoes" (1993).
"I became a bit angry that there was a lack of experiments during Exciter's construction," Gahan said in a 2003 interview. This led him to tell his friends in 2004 that he wanted to write half of the songs on their forthcoming album, but there was "no way" he could be involved in the band without being a writer. There was eventually a compromise, and three of Gahan's songs, "Suffer Well" (nominated for a Grammy award), "I Want It All" and "Nothing's Impossible," were among the entries on Playing the Angel. In 2006, "Suffer Well" was first released as a single, peaking at No. 1. In the United Kingdom, there are 12 out of 12. Although Gahan wrote the lyrics to the B-side "Oh Well," the song was also written by Martin Gore. It was their first writing collaboration.
Dave Valiant, the Damned's frontman, influences Gahan's persona on stage. David Bowie, James Brown, Elvis Presley, and Prince have all been credited with influences, according to him.
