Career
Waylon began his career in 1995 in the television show Telekids, where he appeared in the chorus of the song "Harry Stallion." He was inspired by country music as a youth and he performed on the West Virginian Railroad, playing drums. He was signed by EMI in 1997 and moved to Nashville to record an album. The album was never completed.
In 2001, he lived and worked in the United States, where he also performed with his idol, Waylon Jennings. Waylon returned to the Netherlands after Jennings died in 2002. Waylon's natural abilities were enhanced with Lisa Boray. He joined Santa Rosa's cover band after returning from the United States. He also performed in the Millstreet band Millstreet. "Leven as een beest" was a song performed by Waylon and Rachel Kramer in the National Song Contest's preliminary rounds in 2005.
In 2008, Waylon appeared on SBS 6 for the first time. James Brown's album "It's a Man's Man's World" auditioned. Henkjan Smits and Patricia Paay, both jurors, gave him encouraging feedback. Waylon made it to the final and finished second.
Waylon was the first Dutchman to be signed to the Motown label a year later. On August 7, 2009, his first single, "Wicked Ways," was released as a preview of the album Wicked Ways, which would be released later this month. In the Dutch Top 40 charts, "Wicked Way" reached the top ten positions.
Waylon received his first major music award, the 3FM Award for "Best Newcomer" in April 2010. He set a gold record for his debut album on the television show De Wereld Draait Door a month later. Waylon was one of the top winners of the TMF Awards in June 2010, winning the Borsato Award for new talent. At the TMF Awards Festival in Enschede, Marco Borsato, a nameless participant, received the award.
In October 2011, Waylon introduced "The Escapist" as the first single from his second album, After All, which was released on November 3, 2011. The singles "Lose It" and "Lucky Night" followed this. In the April 2012 3FM Awards, Waylon was named the best singer.
Waylon, along with singer Ilse Delange, was the Dutch entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen. The two performed "Calm After the Storm" as the country/bluegrass song "Calm After the Storm." They secured second place with a total of 238 points behind Conchita Wurst from Austria, who scored 290 points.

Heaven After Midnight, Waylon's third studio album, was released in September 2014 and ranked #1 in the Dutch iTunes charts as well as in the Dutch Album Top 100 for the week of its launch. Bruce Gaitsch, who previously wrote for Chicago and Madonna, appeared on the album in Nashville and Hollywood.
Waylon made a few appearances on talk show RTL Late Night in 2016; he spoke about pop-music and preview tracks from his forthcoming album, which came as a surprise. Seeds were available in many styles, and The 70s-discotribute Our Song led the way. In a joint venture with Radio Veronica's Top 1000 All Time Classics, he continued to explore his versatility by appearing in an annual concert series at the Rotterdam Ahoy.
Waylon will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 for the Netherlands on November 9, 2017. On March 2, 2018, the artist "Outlaw in 'Em" was revealed. He was given the nickname 'Walton' by Eurovision Song Contest participants. On the tenth of May 2018, he reached the final and qualified for the second semi-finals on May 12th. Waylon finished 18th in 18th place with 121 points. Waylon's former host Humberto Tan performed Thanks But No Thanks, one of the other shortlisted songs for the departing host.
In 2019 Waylon returned as a professional in It Takes Two. He also hosted the second episode of DWDD Summerschool, focusing on Outlaw country's key-artists. He continued to do so in a play called My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys.
Waylon's sixth album Human was released in late 2019, and he announced that the fifth edition of his Ahoy concert-series would be devoted to Dutch(-language) pop classics in early 2020.
