DeGeneres hosted a radio show called New Wave New Orleans in the late 1970s, following a two-year service in the Marine Corps, during which he reached the rank of corporal.

He played bass guitar and was a songwriter with The Cold, a New Orleans young-wave band formed in the late 1970s. In 2018, the Cold was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
