Captain Sensible Life

Raymond Ian Burns (born 24 April 1954), also known as Captain Sensible, is an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Sensible co-founded the Damned, a punk rock band that started playing bass before switching to guitar.

Following a UK number one hit with his cover of "Happy Talk," he embarked on a solo career in the 1980s. Sensible's distinctive appearance includes a red beret and sunglasses, usually with white frames.

Early life

Captain Sensible was born in Balham, London, on April 24, 1954. He attended Stanley Technical School for Boys in South Norwood, Croydon. He first played a Bontempi organ. He listened to Brian Auger, Syd Barrett, Small Faces, Egg, Stray, Soft Machine, and the Groundhogs as he grew up.

Personal life

Captain Sensible used to be in a long-term friendship with Rachel Bor of Dolly Mixture. The couple have three children together. He is now married to Mayumi.

Burns used to be a "debauched lunac" who had fun "regardless of the consequences." However, after living at Dial House (the commune where the anarcho-punk band Crass lived) for a week to record an EP in 1981, he became a vegetarian who followed Crass' pacifist and creative goals. Captain Sensible has written many songs about animal rights, including "Torture Me" and the 1985 hit "Wot!"

No Meat?

"I am astonished" at his answer.

Captain Sensible Career

Solo career

Captain Sensible's first solo release came in 1978 with the single "Jet Boy, Jet Girl," an Elton Motello cover when the Damned were on hiatus. On Crass Records, he mirrored this in 1981 with the This Is Your Captain Speaking EP. He signed to A&M Records in 1982 and had a top-one hit with a version of "Happy Talk," the Rodgers and Hammerstein song from South Pacific, with Dolly Mixture and a band featuring Robyn Hitchcock on guitar. This was later sampled from Dizzee Rascal's 2004 album "Dream."

"Wot," "One Christmas Catalogue" and "Glad It's All Over" were two other Captain Sensible songs that became overnight hits in the United Kingdom and Europe, as well as anti-Falklands War "Glad It's All Over," which was co-written and produced by Tony Mansfield. Since leaving A&M Records, including Deltic Records and Humbug Records, he continued to record for various independent labels, including Deltic Records and Humbug Records. Punk Floyd, his solo band, has also performed.

Captain Sensible's recording of "The Snooker Song" from Mike Batt's musical The Hunting of the Snark, was used as the basis music for BBC gameshow Big Break, and he wrote and performed a song called "Brain's Theme" for the film Skinned Deep in 2004.

Captain Sensible is also a member of Dead Men Walking, a supergroup made up of Mike Peters, Kirk Brandon (Spear of Destiny) and Slim Jim Phantom, as well as Sensible Gray Cells with former Damned mate Paul Gray.

I was a Rishi Sunak sceptic, BRENDAN O'NEILL: I was a Rishi Sunak sceptic. However, he has demonstrated that he DOES have political fire in his belly in fighting culture warriors, eco-zealots, and sex offenders

BRENDAN O'NEILL: I have long been a Rishi Sunak sceptic. I once referred to him as "the head boy from hell." He struck me as fair, tenacious, and boss, an infamous hall monitor at Winchester who was promoted to the highest position in the country. Mr Johnson ran for office as the anti-Boris candidate, which made me uncomfortable, since the last time we had a general election, he secured a thumping majority. Boris was never 'blundering,' a Tory insider told The Times, 'He's Captain Sensible.' However, I'm starting to change my mind after months of skepticism. Sunak seems that he has political fire in his belly.
