Justin Hawkins Career

Music career

With the Darkness, Hawkins began playing clubs and bars long before they were signed by record label Atlantic Records. Perpetual to Land, Perpetible's debut in the UK charts on July 7, 2003, went straight to number two, then remaining at number one and remaining there for four weeks before going to number one and subsequently selling 1.5 million copies in the United Kingdom. Over all, there have been 3.5 million copies. The Darkness was inspired by some of their artwork from the local north Suffolk area, including Black Shuck, which refers to the nearby village Blythburgh. The success of this album resulted in heavy touring for the band, as well as European portions of Metallica's Summer Sanitarium Tour 2003. In 2004, they went on to headline the Carling Festival. In 2004, the band received three BRIT Awards for their response to the album, including Best Group, Best Rock Group, and Best Album.

They also won two Kerrang!

In 2004, the Best Live Act and Best British Band were voted for Best Live Act and Best British Band. "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," the album's third single, as well as their Christmas 2003 number 1, "Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End)" dropped short, with both singles falling short. In 2003, there were two in the United Kingdom. In addition, the band appeared on the video for Band Aid 20, with Justin singing a number of lines.

The band's regular media coverage by late 2004 had started to lead to a broader public outrage, and Hawkins and the band themselves seemed to be disillusioned with their continued media appearances, including notably walking off an episode of the nationally syndicated radio talk show Loveline.

Hawkins won a copy of One Way Ticket to Hell... and Back, a month before the album One Way Ticket to Hell... and Back for £350 under the name 'turbogunhawk.' He said he did this in order to track down whoever sold the digitally signed advance copy of the album and try to keep it from happening again.

"One Way Ticket," the first single from their second album's debut, debuted and remained at number 8 on the UK Singles chart, peaking at number 8 on the chart. The album itself was released on November 28, 2005, to mixed reviews. Roy Thomas Baker, a rock musician best known for his relationship with Queen, produced the album. Early sales reports in the United Kingdom revealed that the album did not do well as Permission to Land, its predecessor. The album debuted at no. 1 at no. In the second week of its introduction, the number 11 came in second place, placing it at number 34. Although it went on to be a platinum winner, it was in stark contrast to their debut's five-time platinum status.

"Is It Just Me" was the second single off their second album's catalog. "The article was first published on February 20, 2006." The single gained a preliminary position at No. 1. 6 people were all busy this week, but at number eight, he was finally charted. "Girlfriend" was the Hawkins' third single to be released from the album, according to the singer. "Girlfriend" charted at number 39 on May 22nd.

The band completed their second album with a tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, which featured 12 dates in the major cities. On 4 February, the tour began in Dublin's Point Depot and ended in the Nottingham Arena on the 20th of February. Many of the venues were sold out, with their appeal reportedly becoming more limited. After touring Scandinavia and Continental Europe in March, their world tour, which followed, arrived in Australia and Japan.

Hawkins escaped the Darkness in October 2006. Although drug and alcohol abuses were initially blamed for the band's steady routine, later on national television, Hawkins would announce that he had become sick of the band's constant grind, recording and promoting an album, going on tours for months, back in the studio, etc. "could not know how bands such as the Rolling Stones would survive," he said. Hawkins ranked at number 35 on Spin's list of the top frontmen of all time for his time with the Darkness.

In 2011 and 2012, the band reunited and toured Europe, Asia, and North America in support of their latest album Hot Cakes. In 2015, they announced Last Of Our Kind.

Pinewood Smile, the band's first album to be released on Cooking Vinyl, was released in 2017. The Darkness toured Europe in favor of Guns N' Roses and appeared at a number of festivals in the United Kingdom and Europe during the summer. Live At Hammersmith's album was released in 2018.

The Darkness released Easter Is Cancelled, the album's highest-ranked in the United Kingdom, on October 4th.

The Darkness released a new video for model Abbey Clancy's "In Another Life" in January 2020. The album then made it to the BBC Radio 2 B-List.

Hawkins started British Whale in 2005 as a solo project. "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us," his debut single, which was a recap of the 1974 hit by Sparks, debuted on August 15th. During the half-hour Top Gear of the Pops program, he appeared on the Comic Relief evening on March 16, 2007. Billy Ocean's "Red Light Spells Danger" was performed by him and the three Top Gear presenters.

Hawkins also created a new Myspace profile on March 29th, which included songs that were not supposed to be included on his forthcoming solo album, Panther. The songs are titled "You Can't Hurt Me Anymore," "I've Met Jesus" and "Whichever." Hawkins performed "Gay in the 80's," a new song to his collection on May 12th. Later today, he took out all of the songs and said, "You'll just have to wait." Hot Legs was released as a new band line-up and name. The aforementioned songs were included on the Hot Leg album Red Light Fever.

Hawkins has also revealed that he has been involved in the creation of two Magnet Watch albums named Nude Horizon and Party Party Time. Hawkins posted instructions to Do the Green Thing, an organisation for which he has written a new song called "Doing in the Dark," on Monday, prompting people to switch off and save electricity. The song has not been released as a single, but it is available as a free download.
